Publisher's Message

For this week's issue, we look at the Awesome American Fork Cavemen and Ferocious Pleasant Grove Vikings each taking a turn at harvesting a big win over the Jordan Beetdiggers, AKA the Plowboys, in 16-under division games of the Utah Baseball Academy League. We will also see how the Awesome Cavemen fared in their 17-under division games against the Juan Diego Soaring Eagles and the Lone Peak Knights, AKA the Loners. We will also see how Pleasant Grove did against a 15-under division team fielded by the Riverton Silverwolves, AKA the Silverpups, in UBAL play. Let's get to those stories.

Awesome AF Cavemen Harvest 11-3 Win Over Jordan Plowboys in 16-Under Division Play July 5

In a 16-under division game for the Utah Baseball Academy League July 5, the Awesome American Fork Cavemen defeated the Jordan Beetdiggers, AKA Plowboys, at American Fork.

During the first 1 1/2 innings, the Plowboys took a 2-1 over the Awesome Cavemen. In the bottom of the second, Brock Lamb chopped a one-run double to tie the game at two. A little brother of former Awesome Cavewoman volleyball player Jenny "Munchkin" Hardman, pitcher Sean Hardman held the Plowboys scoreless for four straight innings, even though they did get a fourth-inning single from Mark Krueger, a brother of famed local baseball player Mason "I.M. Knot Freddie" Krueger This allowed the Awesome Cavemen a chance to pull ahead.

Singling into left at the start of the third's lower half, Milo Abbott came home on a Zac Shultz double. Alec "Hawk Eye" Mounteer singled Shultz in to fuel a three-run rally.

In the bottom of the fifth, Eli "Iza Comin'" Aubrey singled into left, and Mounteer doubled him in, setting off a fivve-run rally, highlighted by Hardman's two-run double.

Doubling into center in the top of the sixth, Krueger came home on a one-out single smacked by Big Cat Guiterrez. American Fork retaliated with a double play. On one out in the bottom of the sixth, Aubrey singled in a run to end the game's scoring.

Ferocious Vikings Defeat Jordan Plowboys 12-3 July 8

The Ferocious Pleasant Grove Vikings Defeated the Jordan Beetdiggers 12-3 in a 16-under division game during Utah Baseball Academy League play at Jordan July 8.

The Ferocious Vikings secured a 3-0 lead in the first three innings. In the first inning, Brody Blackhurt singled in a run, and Braden King doubled him. Braden Cox hit a one-run single in third. Pleasant Grove kept Jordan from getting anywhere with a single Marc Krueger hit into left.

In the top of the fifth, a Ty "Green" Stevenson single enabled the Vikings to load the bases on no outs. Jimmy Carr singled Stevenson in to start a seven-run rally. It saw King double in two runs while Pleasant Grove picked up additional runs on singles from Chandler Bice, Gavin "Grizzly" Bahr, Aiden Newanswander.

The game should have ended that inning. However, a Cody Davis single allowed the Plowboys to load the bases on no outs. Davis came home on a passed ball. Another passed ball let two more Plowboys come home. Pleasant Grove didn't let the Plowboys make any more runs after the fifth.

A seventh-inning error let Cox and Rich Colson come home. The game's scoring ended at at that point.

Viking Coach Heath Stevenson said, "We swung our bats well. King's first-inning double broke the ice for us."

Awesome Cavemen Win 1-0 at Home Against Juan Diego Screamin' Canaries July 6

The Awesome American Fork Cavemen's 17-under division won 1-0 at home against the Juan Diego Soaring Eagles, AKA the Screamin' Canaries, in Utah Baseball Academy League action July 6.

In pitching all seven innings, Awesome Caveman Danny Beddes gave up only three hits. Marc Howa hit a single off him in the third and sixth innings. Howa's first hit allowed the Screamin' Canaries to load the bases on two outs, but Beddes grounded out Austin Geurtsen. Kyle Pauley singled off Beddes in the fifth, but the Cavemen pinched the Screamin' Canary in a putout play at second.

American Fork Coach Jarod Ingersoll said, "Our guys worked ahead of Juan Diego's pitcher. We were hitting the ball into holes, but they wouldn 't let us move our men around base a lot. Our guys were aggressive on defense. We kept Juan Diego from capitalizing on their three hits."

Every inning saw American Fork having problems leaving men on base. In the second inning's bottom half, for example, Sean Hardman hit a two-out double, only to see pitcher Grayden Carr strike out Ky Clayton.

In the third inning, Zac Willis hit a one-out single that moved Nate Andrus to third. After Brock "Mutton" Lamb chopped a single to load the base, Carr struck out Beddes and Jake Miles.

A "nephew" of TV's Hank Hill, Cade Hill scored the game's only run when Clayton singled him in the bottom of the fourth. After that inning, the game returned to being a defensive battle.

Loners Defeat Awesome Cavemen 7-5 in UBAL Thriller July 8

The Lone Peak Knights, AKA the Loners, came from behind in a Utah Baseball Academy League game at American Fork July 8 to win 7-5 over the Awesome American Fork Cavemen's 17-under division team.

A cousin of Hollywood starlet Ursula Andrus, pitcher Nate Andrus held the Loners scoreless in the first inning. In the bottom of it, Brock "Mutton" Lamb chopped a double that moved Zac Willis to third. Danny Beddes singled both Awesome Cavemen in. A "distant cousin" of TV's Bart Simpson, Justin Simpson struck out Jake Miles, and the Loners soon staged a double play that retired American Fork to the field.

The second inning opened with Loners Braxton Barnes and Braxton Deveraux flying out into left field. Tanner Smith and Simpson each singled to keep Lone Peak's scoring hopes afloat. Casey Lundquist singled Smith in.

On two outs in the bottom of the second, Lamb chopped a single that drove in Morgan "Mo" Flinders, who had double. Lamb then came on a Beddes single.

On one out in the third, Jeremiah "Bullfrog" Van Dyke, actor Dick Van Dyke's "distant cousin." singled into left, and Barnes batted him in. Hunter Trowbridge while Barnes got nailed in a fielder's choice play at second.

Carson Kelshaw hit a two-out, one-run single to the game at four in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of it, Beddes singled Flinders in again to break the 4-4 tie. The Loners didn't let the Awesome Cavemen make any more runs after that inning.

In the seventh, Barnes doubled in Van Dyke to open a three-run rally. Simpson singled in Trowbridge, and a Matt Lee walk scored the last run for the night.

Loner Coach Brandon Deveraux said, "We simply had good pitching tonight. Justin Simpson threw strikes that put them off balance."

Riverton Silverpups Fall to Ferocious Vikings' 15-Under Team July 9

In Utah Baseball Academy League action for the 15-under division July 9, the Ferocious Pleasant Grove Vikings defeated the Riverton Silverwolves, AKA the Silverpups 11-2.

With the first three innings ending in scoreless deadlocks, spectators could tell that the Pleasant Grove and Riverton players had faced off against each other in lots of baseball games. Pleasant Grove did get a first-inning single from Jade Smoot and third-inning one from Spencer Romney, a distant cousin of US Presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

The scoreless deadlock ended in the top of the first when Silverpup Justin Garth singled in Gavin Lopez and Jordan Jordan Johnson. That turned out to be the only time that the Silverpups scored in the game.

In the bottom of the fourth, Gavin "Grizzly" Bahr doubled in two runs, then came home on a Spencer Romney single. Romney made the fourth Viking run on a Silverpup error at first.

Hitting a fifth inning triple, T.J. Wynn came home on a Braden Cox single. On one out in the sixth, Pleasant Grove loaded the bases on singles form Romney, Chandler May, and Kayden Clasby. A Cox walk set off a five-run rally which put the game away for Pleasant Grove. During the rally, Jade Smoot singled in two runs.
