Timp Sports Weekly Publisher

In a 17-under division game for the Utah Baseball Academy League June 21, the Awesome American Fork Cavemen harvested a 14-4 win on the Sandy diamond of the Jordan Beetdiggers, AKA the Plowboys.

American Fork Caveman Coach Mark Willis said, "Our guys stayed on top of their game tonight. However, I do wish they could have faced better pitchers tonight. Facing the best pitchers in the state can make them better hitters."

Getting on bases through walks during the top of the first, Ty Flinders and Cousin Ryan Draper
both raced home on a single passed ball. Tripling into center, Zach "Robbie" Robinson got singled in by Jake "Thumper" Miles, who then stole home soon afterwards.

The Awesome Cavemen improve their lead at 10-0 through a second-inning, six-run rally sparked by Tyson Heaps' singling in Morgan "Mo" Flinders. During that rally, Ty Fllinders doubed in a run, and Robinson tripled in another two runners.

Posting six strikeouts, pitcher Blake Brailsford held the Plowboys scoreless during the first two innings. He struck out three out of four Plowboy batters in the bottom of the first, and Tommy Vitti had tripled off him in the bottom of the second, Brailsford retired three straight batters. Even though Vince Mallard singled off Brailsford in the bottom of the third, he got pinched in a fielder's choice play at second.

With Robinson doubling at the start of the fourth, Zach Willis tripled him in, then came home on a Nick Searle single during a four-run rally, which climaxed with Zach Haws singling in a run and racing home on a passed ball.

In top of the fifth, Brailsford hit one-out single into right, then moved to third on a Ty Flinders double. The Plowboys didn't let the Awesome Cavemen go on another rally, though.

Having held American Fork scoreless in the top of the fifth, Jordan proceeded to carry out a rally of its own in the bottom of the inning. The rally unfolded with Mallard doubling in Austin "Auggie" Anderon. The Plowoys picked up their next three runs on a Vitti walk and singles from Connor Ogdeen and Mitch Elliott. Center fielder Jake Miles shut down the rally with catching an Anderson fly ball.

Through Keean Norman's pitching June 23, the Lone Peak Knights, AKA the Loners, won 9-3 over the Awesome American Fork Cavemen's 17-under division team during Utah Baseball Academy League action played at American Fork.

Norman struck out six American Fork batters as he pitched during the first four inning. The Awesome Cavemen could make any hits against him until the third. By then, the Loners had already acquired a 2-0 lead. Lone Peak got on the scoreboard first during the top of the second. During that inning, Loner Jake Hepworth hit a two-out double off pitcher Blake Brailsford, and Sing Along With Mitch Call singled Hepworth in. Walked by Brailsford, Logan Leavitt got thrown out in a fielder's choice play at second. Getting on base on a third-inning walk, Matt "Don't Call Me Jimmy" Olson raced home,

Hitting a center-field single in the bottom of the third, Tyson Heaps soon got singled in by Kai Clayton on two outs. Norman didn't let the Awesome Cavemen score any further runs until the sixth. In the meantime, the Loners' lead continued swelling. In the fourth, for example, Hepworth homered in Josh Stephan, who had opened the inning with a left-field single. The fifth saw Norman double in Ty Reese on two outs, and reliever Ryan Draper prevented a Loner rally that inning by grounding out Stephan.

Singling into left during the start of the sixth, Hepworth soon stole home opening a four-run rally, highlighted by Rhett "Whistlin' Dixie" Reiber's smaking a one-run double.

When the sixth's bottom of half opened with Ralphie Holding singling into left, the Cavemen made a desperate effort to rally back. Flinders singled in Holding on one out, and Robinson's two-out single scored Morgan "Mo" Flinders. Socked with a double play in the bottom of the seventh, the Cavemen couldn't recovered quickly enough to club their way back into the game.

Singling into left field in the top of the third, Carter soon scored a run on an error to put the Rockies back ahead 5-4. Caleb Clarks' center-field double set the stage for a breaking of a White Sox takeover of the lead. Brayden Oxborrow singled in Clark to tie the game at five.

Not letting the Rockies capitalize on Chase Carter in the top of the fifth, the White Sox went on a six-run rally opened by Green's one-run single. During the rally, Kline Olpin doubled in two runs, and Spingnahle hit a one-run double.

Chase Carter singled into right in the fifth, only to get put out at second. The putout shut down the Rockies' last chance for rallying back. Green's one-run single put the game away for the White Sox.

Awesome AF Cavebatters Defeat Ferocious PG Vikings 6-2 in UBAL Thriller June 25
By Dean Von Memmott
Timp Sports Weekly Publisher

Friday, June 25, went into American Fork baseball history as the first showdown between Awesome American Fork Caveman Coach Jarod "The Prankster" Ingersoll and Ferocious Pleasant Grove Viking Darren "The Blue" Henry.

Until getting hired recently by the Pleasant Grove High administration as head Viking baseball oach , Henry had been working as an assistant coach for Ingersoll. Henry showed up with his crew of Ferocious Vikings in American Fork to carry out a raid on the Awesome Cavemen's hallowed baseball diamond. The Cavemen didn't let the Ferocious Vikings get away with pulling off the raid. American Fork rebuffed Pleasant Grove 6-2.

Ingersoll had Jeremy Reynolds pitch all seven innings in the thriller. The Caveman coach, "Jeremy threw very well all seven innings. He struck out seven of their batters. Also, we manufactured some great hits like Jake Miles' fifth-inning double that clutched the game for us. Ryan Pitcher made some big catches for us in center field. We had only one error in the game."

The son of Jason Reynolds, a former Brighton baseball player, Jeremy held the Ferocious Vikings scoreless during the first two innings.

In the bottom of the first, Ryan Pitcher doubled into left, and Reynolds whacked a one-out, infield single. Before the Awesome Cavemen could get a rally going, second baseman Court Iorg turned up a double play.

Singling into center at the start of the second's bottom half, Nick Searle scored the game's first run on a Tyson Heaps sacrifice groundout.

After belting a one-out single into left during the third, Viking Jake Barnhardt came home on a passed ball. Rylan Peteren's two-out, one-run single tipped Pleasant Grove ahead 2-1. Reynolds held the Ferocious Vikings scoreless during the game's final four innings, even though he did give up singles to Iorg and Jesse De St. Jour.

Reynolds singled in B.J. Eldredge, then came home on a Viking error. Jake "Thumper" Miles hit first double of the night, scoring Zach "Robbie" Robinson. After Miles' second double brought in two fifth-inning runs, the Cavemen held the Vikings in check. The game ended with Reynolds striking out De St. Jour.

Ingersoll said, "Darren will do really good as head coach. The kids there know him really well. He has worked as an assistant baseball coach at Pleasant Grove."

Timp Sports Weekly Publisher

In a Utah Baseball Academy League game played at American Fork June 26, the Salt Lake County Marshalls defeated the Awesome American Fork Cavemen's 16-under team 10-5.

The game opened with Marshall London Meesom singling into left, but he got put out on a throw from catcher Jake "Thumper" Miles to second baseman Morgan "Mo" Flinders. Defensive plays like that one caused the first inning to end in a scoreless deadlock.

A second-inning error, though, let the Marshalls go on a seven-run rally, highlighed by Mason "I'm Not Freddie" Kruger's one-run double.

Doubling in the third's bottom half, Sean Hardman scored the first Caveman run on a Flinders single.

On one out in the fourth, Marshall Trevor Carlisle doubled in Colton Shaver and Chris Bailey, and he scored a run himself.

In the bottom of the fourth, Cade Hill, a distant "cousin" of TV's Hank Hill, doubled in Jake "Thumper" Miles to begin a three-run rally. During it, Tyson Heaps came home on an error, and Kai Clayton singled in a run.

With Blake Brailsford doubling into center in the bottom of the fifth, B.J. Eldredge singled him. Third baseman Kruger's turning up a double play in the sixth ruined American Fork's chances for rallying back.

In Utah Baseball Academy League action at Alta June 18, the Lone Peak Knights, AKA the Loners, defeated the Alta Hawks' 17-under division team 9-8 in an  eight-inning thriller.

Guided by Josh Stephan's two-run single in the top of the first, the Loners took a 3-1 lead over the Hawks, AKA the Tweeties, in the first inning.

Singling in the top of the fifth, Dakota Murdock soon came home on a passed ball, and Stephan clubbed a one-run single to improve the lead at 8-4. The Tweeties refused to let Lone Peak's four-run lead scare them out of their feathers. Doubling in the bottom of the fifth, Dakota Walbeck scored on a Brian Relf's sacrifice fly.

Despite Flygare and Leavitt's singles enabling Lone Peak to load the bases in the sixth, Alta held the Lones scoreless both that inning and in the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, a Rose double permitted Connor Groskrutze to double in two runs, then come on a Ben Gruber single to tie the game at eight.

Getting on base through a walk in the top of the eight, Jake Hepworth scored a go-ahead run for the Loners on a Matt Olsen single.

In the bottom of the eighth, Isham hit a one-out single off reliever Murdock, only to get nailed in a squeeze play in between second and third. After Rose had singled off the reliever, Murdock struck out Relf to win the game for Lone Peak.

By Dean Von Memmott
Timp Sports Weekly Publisher

The Awesome American Fork Cavemen opened their Utah Baseball Academy League regular season by winning 3-2 on the home diamond of the Spanish Fork Dons' 17-under division team on June 14.

The pitching of Spanish Fork's Hayden "Full" Nielsen made it hard for the Awesome Cavemen to go on any scoring rallies. In the top of the first, for example, he caused Ryan Draper and Ryan Pitcher to ground out, and Nielsen struck out B.J. Eldridge to hold the Cavemen scoreless.

Even though Nielsen and Schidler Bennett each singled off pitcher Blake Brailsford in the bottom of the first, the Caveman chucker struck out Jarrett Jarvis and Matt Nelsen to cause the first inning to end in a scoreless deadlock.

On two outs in the top of the second, Jeremy Reynolds singled in Nick Searle, then came home on a passed ball. Full Nielsen didn't let the Awesome Cavemen score again until the seventh.

Brailsford's ability to hold the Dons scoreless lasted until of the bottom of the fourth. On two outs, Andy Perkins singled in Nielsen and Jarvis to tie the game at two.

Replacing Brailsford in the bottom of the sixth, Reynolds kept the Dons from capitalizing on an American Fork error that inning.

In the seventh, Zach "Robbie" Robinson hit an infield single, and Reynolds singled him in two outs. Though Reynolds got stuck on second, he did end the game in American Fork's favor by striking out Matt Nelsen.

By Dean Von Memmott
Timp Sports Weekly

The White Sox took a 7-0 lead during the game's first three innings. The Cardinals finally got onto the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. That innings, Cardinals Brayden Bezzant and Tyler McBride each hit a single into left. Jaden Smith's sacrifice fly scored Bezzant.

The Cardinals held the White Sox scoreless in the bottom of the fourth, and in the top of the fifth, Kalin Godwin hit a two-out single into right, and a Bezzant single advanced him to third. McBride singled Godwin in.

In response, Riley Murphy tripled in Bryce Ellis and Emmett Green. The Cardinals didn't let the White Sox make any more runs after that triple.

The next inning, Hunter Richie, Tyler Bigler, and Jordan Henna all got on base through walks, giving the Cardinals a chance to carry out a long, two-out rally. However, as soon as Godwin had singled in Richie, Bezzant struck out, ending the Cardinals last real chance for flying back into the game.

Ferocious PG Vikings Produce 1st Win for New Coach During Tight Contest Against Spanish Fork June 16
By Dean Von Memmott
Timp Sports Weekly Publisher

In a 17-under division game for the Utah Baseball Academy League June 16, the Ferocious Pleasant Grove Vikings won 4-3 over the Spanish Fork Dons at Viking Field.

The game went down as a good beginning for Darren Henry's turn as head baseball coach for the Ferocious Vikings. He had long been involved in their baseball programs. He began in it as a player in the 1990's, and he rejoined it a while back as an assistant coach under Ryan Hall. This past season, Henry had worked as an assistant under Awesome American Fork Caveman Coach Jarod "The Prankster" Ingersoll. Henry took over the Ferocious Viking baseball program shortly after the recent resignation of Hall, who is expected to continue teaching at Pleasant Grove.

Having endured a one-run loss at home to American Fork June 14, the Dons came to Pleasant Grove, expecting to have a gay, old time in winning on the Vikings' diamond. For the first four innings, the Dons had stayed ahead 2-0. Jarrett Jarvis put them on the board with a two-run double that he slugged in the first inning. When right fielder Jesse De St. Jour picked off a Butch Nelson fly ball in the first, the Vikings proceeded to hold the Dons in check.

During the next four innings, pitcher Drew Velez kept the Dons from bringing in any runs, even though Andy Perkins had hit two singles off him. Pitcher Perkins held the Vikings scoreless until the bottom of the fifth.

Henry said, "When they hit us with that double play, our guys could have given up, but they came together to pull off a two-run rally."

During it, Rylan "Rhino" Peterson hit a three-run homer over the left-field fence. Court Iorg hit a solo homer to end Viking scoring for the night.

In the sixth's top half, Hayden "Full" Nielsen singled into left, and he came home on a Perkins single. Pleasant Grove prevented the Dons from tying the game at four.

Doubling into left during the start of the sixth's lower half, Velez got stuck on base. However, Velez kept the Dons from putting any runners on base during the top of the seventh. The win healed the sting of a 12-0 defeat that the Vikings had suffered at the hands of the Lone Peak Knights, AKA the Loners, June 14.

To make it to the state tournament around the 24th of next month, we must finish among the top six teams in our region."

By Dean Von Memmott
Timp Sports Weekly Publisher

AKA the Li'l Injuns, the Bountiful Braves won both ends of a UBAL preseason doubleheader on the Ferocious Pleasant Grove Vikings' home field June 8.

Pitching during most of the first game, Ferocious Viking Brock Starr held the Li'l Injuns scoreless during the first three innings. Starr also struck out seven Bountiful batters.

The first game's opening inning commenced with Brave Cam Zollinger getting on base through an error. With right fielder Shawn Jacobson snatching a Big Johnny Griffone flyball, Starr proceeded to keep the mistake from coming back to haunt the Vikings. The pitcher struck out Brayden Franksen and Taylor Byington before Zollinger could come home.

Walked by pitcher Astin Spongahle in the bottom of the inning, Ferocious Viking leadoff batter Riley Erickson soon came home on Cade Hooley's one-out single.

Bountiful kept the Viking lead stuck at 1-0 until the fourth. In the top of it, Franksen scored a tying run on a Sam Cook single. Starr struck out Spongahle and Luke "Use the Force" Larsen to keep the Li'l Injuns from charging ahead.

In the bottom of the fourth, a Drew Velez double moved Hooley to third. Starr singled in Hooley to begin a four-run rally, which saw Josh Scoresby and Davy Stevens each hit a one-run single.

When Taylor Byington hit a two-run  single to clip the lead 5-3 in top of the fifth, the Vikings received a strong message that they might not emerge victorious from the first game. Pleasant Grove did receive some additional breathing room in the bottom of the sixth when Stevens singled in Starr on two outs.

However, in the seventh's top half, the Braves loaded the bases on two outs, and Larsen hit a one-run single that sparked a seven-run stampede for Bountiful. By the time the Vikings had shut down the rally, the Li'l Injuns commanded a 10-6 lead.

Pleasant Grove kept the Li'l Injuns' lead stuck at 3-0 until the fifth when Griffone tripled in Greg Goodwin for the final Bountiful run of the night.

In the seventh, Iorg singled in Stevens and Jesse De St. Jour. However, Bountiful shut Pleasant Grove down soon after that hit.

Singling at the start of the second inning's lower half, Yankee Gavin Burch singled into center, and he stole around the diamond to make a tie-breaking run. On one out, Dusty Sorensen  came home on an error at first. After Josh Parkinson struck out, Durfey flew out to second, ending the inning.

The Giants regained the lead in the top of the third. Walks by Jacob Elhart and Bradshaw caused a Duston single to load the bases on no outs. After Elhart got thrown out in a fielder's choice play at home, Bradshaw came home on an error at first. Dutson scored a tying run on a Colby Frost sacrifice groundout. Rick Elliott's one-run single put the Giants ahead 5-4.

Their success of their comeback effort couldn't survive the bottom of the third. Petersen singled in Will Poulsen to open a six-run rally for the Yankees. The rally got powered by singles from Jason Nelson, Grand McKenna, Sorensen, and Ryland Marlowe. Only when the Giants pinched Marlowe in a fielder's choice play at third did the rally finally end.

The Giants once more managed to load the bases on two walks and a Bradshaw single in the top of the fourth. A one-out single from Dutson reeled in Campbell, but the Yankees decked the Giants with a double play that began at second base.

In the bottom of the fourth, Thomas doubled in Poulsen, then went on to steal home. On two outs, McKenna singled in Petersen, who had hit a center-field single earlier in the inning.

On no outs in the fifth, Elliott doubled in Fronst and Tyler Whitlock. Elliott then scored a run on a passed ball. Reliever Poulsen struck out three batters to shut down the comeback effort.

In Timp Colt League action at American Fork's Rotary Park June 2, the American Fork Cardinals bombed the Pleasant Grove Braves 20-3.

The Braves didn't have a prayer against the pitching of Cardinal Jordan "Salty" Saltmarsh. He struck out two of the three batters that Pleasant Grove threw against him in the top of the first.

Hit by a Jesse Smith pitch in the bottom of the first, Cardinal C.J. Miller came home on a Jake Blackhurst triple that unleashed an eight-run rally for the Cardinals. During that rally Saltmarsh triple in a run, and Taison Smith, the great-nephew of the late Marlowe "The Shiny Guy" Manning, doubled in two runs.

After Saltmarsh had held the Braves scoreless in the top of the second, he hit a two-run double in the bottom of the inning to unleash a four-run rally. After Saltmarsh had come home on an error, Ricky Smith singled in Benji Shepherd.

The Braves finally scaled onto the scoreboard in the third. Singling into left, Jake Dunn came home on a Matt Horsely double. Soon afterwards, Casey Nerher singled in Horsely and Jesse Smith, then advanced to third on a Luke Castleberry double. American Fork shut Pleasant Grove down at that point, and the Braves couldn't go on another scoring run.

As soon as Miller had hit a left-field single in the bottom of the third, Blackhurst drove him in with a two-run in-the-park homer. It started another eight-run rally, which saw Shepherd and Zach Larsen each double in two runners.

Shooting down the Cardinals 14-4 in American Fork Pony League action at Bus Manning Field June 3, the Pirates stayed undefeated in their conference's standings.

Pirate Coach Brian "Bucket" Parker said, "This leaves us still undefeated in the league as we go into our two final weeks of season play. Our pitchers tonight [Colby "Zohan" Cordova and Andy "007" Bartholomew] threw really well, and we played some pretty good defense.

A son of former state wrestling champ Rick "Dr. Death" Bartholomew, Andy "007" Bartholomew opened the game with a center-field single he hit off pitcher Hayden Payne. After Tanner "Houdini" Nielson got on base through an error, Riley "Beatis" Smith singled in Bartholomew to open a five-run rally that saw Hunter "Special Big K" Schmensky and Chance "Cool Whipcracker" Beasley each  hit a one-run single, and Cordova contributed a one-run double.

Getting on base through a walk in the bottom of the first,  Payne got singled in by Brayden Bezzant. Cordova held the Cardinal to that one run.

With Payne holding the Pirates scoreless the next inning, the Cardinals loaded the bases on two outs in the bottom of the second. Kalin Goodwin singled in Tyler Bigler and Hunter Richie to put the Cardinals within 5-3.

Doubling in the third's top half, Smith came home on a Matt "Smiley" Dayton single, and  Keaton "Big Foot" Whitten scored another Pirate run as Beasley hit into a double play.

The Pirates held the Cardinals scoreless in the third and fourth innings. In the fourth, for example, the Pirates ended the inning by pulling off a double play.

Unable to make any runs in the fourth despite a Hudson single, the Pirates began a seven-run rally in the fifth when Smith tripled in Bartholomew. Dayton, Hudson, Cordova, Schmensky, and Colby "Foot Long" Walker each contributed a one-run single to the rally.

In the bottom of the fifth, Godwin singled into left, then scored as the Pirates pinched Bezzant at second. Bartholomew struck out Jaden Smith to end the game.
