Timp Sports Weekly Publisher

During Utah Baseball Academy League action played at Lone Peak June 23, the Awesome American Fork Cavemen's 17-under division team defeated the Lone Peak Knights, AKA the Loners, 15-8.

On two outs in the top of the first, Colt Scharer doubled in Kastan Rasmussen, and then came home on a single hit by Mason Warenski, a distant cousin of my former schoolmate Mike Warenski. Mason tried to turn his one-run single into a double, hut the Loners forced him out at second.

In the bottom of the first, Tater Hansen doubled in two runs to tie the game at two. The 2-2 deadlock got smashed in the top of the second. Singles from Ryan "Rhino" Thompson, Spencer "Roonie" Shelton, and Jace Ybarra resulted in American Fork loading the bases on no outs in the second inning. Taylor Sabotka singled in Thompson to set off a four-run rally for the Awesome Cavemen.

A Connor Boyd one-run single clipped the lead to 6-3, but the Awesome Cavemen answered with two third-inning runs brought by singles hit by Thompson and Ibarra. Despite a Nick Larsen single hit in the bottom of the inning, pitcher Buster "Bunny" Hardman did not let the the Loners score any runs in the third and fourth innings.

Thanks to one-out doubles hit by Hardman and Rasmussen, the Awesome Cavemen picked up a run in the fourth. The Loners retaliated with a double play that retired American Fork to the field.

Holding American Fork scoreless in the fifth, the Loners went on a four-run rally in the bottom of the inning. The rally started with an Avery Goeckeritz sacrifice fly scoring a run.  The rally ended with left fielder Scharer picking off a Stevie Burrastan fly ball.

Despite Hardman singling into center at the start of the sixth, the Awesome Cavemen again got held scoreless. Seventh-inning doubles hit by Thompson and Shelton motivated the Awesome Cavemen to go on a six-run rally, highlighted by Rasmussen's three-run triple, followed by his steal to home.

Doubling in on a one-out run in the bottom of the seventh, Mikey Evans came home on a Pope single. American Fork shut the Loners down right afterwards.

In a 17-uring nder age division game during Utah Baseball Academy League action at Pleasant Grove June 28, the Ferocious Pleasant Grove Vikings defeated the Brighton Bengals, AKA the Bad Old Puddy Tats, 10-0.

Lasting six innings, the game left the Bad Old Puddy Tats shouting in frustration, "Thutherin' Thuccatash!"

A "distant cousin" of TV character Hank Hill, Pleasant Grove Coach Rock Hill said, "Ben Eldredge worked on focusing on keeping his pitches in the strike. He kept throwing strikes that threw them off balance. Also, Ben Elderedge and Ty Wells came up with key extra-base hits for us at the right times."

Elderedge gave up only three hits in the game. Riley Stewart singled in the second for the first Bad Old Puddy Tat hit of the game, and Mousy Jensen singled right after him, only to get stuck on base with Stewart. Dusty Overstreet slugged a third-inning single into center for the Bad Old Puddy Tats' third and final of the game, but he got stuck on base.

Getting on base on a first-inning walk, Eldredge scored the first Pleasant Grove run on a Chantz Cook single. Brayden Livington singled in Chris Merrill. On two outs in the second, Wells tripled in Tate Briggs.  Pleasant Grove didn't rest on its 3-0 lead. In the third, Cook singled in Merril, and then came home on a Livingston sacrifice groundout.

Although the Bad Old Puddy Tats held Pleasant Grove scoreless in the fourth, the Ferocious Vikings did get a double from Wells.

Singling in the fifht, Keaton Turner came home on Eldredge's double, and a Merrill sacrifice groundout scored Eldredge. A "distant cousin" of Family Guy character Peter Griffin, Bryson Griffin triple in Coleman Edwards and Brennan May. Wells sinlged Griffin in for the winning run.

As Brighton's arch rivals, the Alta Tweeties would say, those unfortunate Bad Old Puddy Tats didn't know how to hit against Eldredge.

In Utah Baseball Academy League action at American Fork June 24, the Awesome American Fork Cavemen's 16-under division team defeated the Jordan Beetdiggers, AKA the Plowboys, 10-3.

The game unfolded with the Plowboys going on a two-out rally. After leadoff Plowboy batter Colt Papic grounded out to shortstop Tanner Adams, Jade Bollingsbrook singled off pitcher Kobe Lindemann. Bollingsbrook got pinched in a fielder's choice play at second, but that didn't discourage the Plowboys any. A Henley Arendama single spurred them on to loading the base. The Plowboys then took a 3-0 lead on two walks and a sacrifice groundout. Lindemann struck out Jackson Hughes to shut the Plowboys down. They couldn't make another hit until Papic singled in the top of the fifth.

Singling on one out in the bottom of the first, McKade Worthen stole home for the first Awesome Caveman run of the game. On one out in the bottom of the second, Dakota "Black Hills" Colby singled in Riley Bezzant, a cousin of Lone Peak Loner baseball coach Matt Bezzant.

That inning, Brit Warner singled in a run to set off a decisive rally for American Fork. Jake Smith doubled two runs, and then he came home on a Marty McKoy single. On two out, Worthen tripled in McKoy to leave American Fork with a 7-3 lead at the end of the inning.

Papic singled at the start of the fifth, but he got snared in a double play turned up by Adams. In the bottom of the fifth, a Warner sacrifice groundout scored Lindemann, who had singled on one out that inning. A three-run rally unfolded.

American Fork tried capitalizing on singles hit by Adams and Lindeman, the Plowboys prevented the Awesome Cavemen from stretching their 10-3 lead. American Fork retaliated by holding Jordan scoreless in the seventh.

Lehi Froggies Shock Springville Hellions 3-1 in Prep League Action Play June 27

Timp Sports Weekly Publisher

In Prep League action at Lehi June 27, the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, shocked the Springville Red Devils, AKA the Helltown Hellions, 3-1.

The game got called after the fifth, because of concerns of a thunder storm roaring in. Lehi never trailed in the game.

Froggie Drew Zimmerman showed the Hellions what a difficult pitcher he could be. During the top of the first, for example, he struck out Hellions Ryan "Evil-Eyes" Jenkins and Travis "Mr. Bad" Mosley while forcing Matt "Hell Stud" Peterson to ground out.

With Zimmerman holding the Hellions scoreless in the first two innings, he enabled Koy Smith to single Cam Grace and come home on a Brock Hanson double to allow the Froggies to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

With Zimmerman post three strikeouts in the top of the second, Helltown seemed destined not to pick up a single run during the game. However, in the top of the third, a Whit "Hell Raisin'" Montgomery single enabled the Hellions to load the bases on two outs. A Peterson walk scored Montgomery. Zimmerman struck out Mosley, though, to prevent the Hellions from staging a scoring rally.

Getting on base through a walk in the bottom of the fourth, Smith scored on a Hanson sacrifice groundout. That ended scoring for the afternoon game.

The Awesome Cavemen never trailed in the game. It opened with Awesome Caveman Kody "Coco" Hall singling into left. Hitting an infield single right afterwards, Seth "Needles" Taylor soon moved  into scoring position with Hall. After Justin DeMarco, a grandnephew of my former schoolmate Ken DeMarco, struck out, Jake Norton singled in Hall. Colby "Coba" Willis triple in Taylor, and then came home on a Mick Madsen single. With Spencer "Roonie" Shelton striking out to end the inning's top half, the Puppies attempted to stage a comeback in the bottom of the first. Doubling into left, Puppy Trayton Harmon came home on an Angel Gillilland sacrifice groundout. Pitcher DeMarco didn't let the Puppies score any more runs in the first, and he held them scoreless in the bottom of the second despite giving up a single to Camel Habif.

In the top of the second, DeMarco clubbed a two-out single to score Taylor, who had singled on one out into left. DeMacro then came home on another Norton single to improve the Awesome Caveman lead at 5-1.

Holding American Fork scoreless in the top of the third, the Puppies quickly loaded the bases on no outs through singles fired by Elijah Mitchell, Angel Gillilland, and Darius "Puffy" Huffman. A Griffy Cisneros sacrifice fly scored Mitchell, but DeMarco struck out Drew "Brimestone" Gillilland and Chris Okato to prevent a long Puppy scoring spree.

One-run doubles hit by Norton and Madsen sparked a eight-run rally for the Awesome Cavemen in the top of the fourth. The rally put the score at 14-2. On one out in the bottom of the fourth, Brannen Williams homered in Jordan Williams to cut the lead to  14-4. American Fork retaliated with a double play turned up by shortstop Madsen.

The Awesome American Fork Cavemen defeated the Spanish Fork Dons, AKA the Gaytowners, 3-2 in a 17-under age division game at American Fork during Utah Baseball Academy League play June 25.

The Gaytowners made a convincing display that they were indeed as manly as the masculine girls of their hometown. Believe me, you don't want to mess with Spanish Fork girls. They're so muscular that they will lay you out flat with just one punch. The Gaytowners held my Awesome Cavemen scoreless for four innings. The only two innings in which American Fork could score runs were in the first and fifth innings.

Pitcher Seth "Needles" Taylor held Spanish Fork, AKA Gaytown, scoreless in the top of the first, despite walking Devin "Mr. Hollywood" Argyle.

A Colby "Coba" Willis walk scored the winning run, even though Gaytown reliever Remo Rivera shut American Fork down after the fifth. For this week's issue, we focus mainly on the opening week of the Utah Baseball Academy League's 2014 summer season. We will also look at a Prep League game that Lehi hosted. We were going to do reports about recent Colt League games and and the American Fork Pony League championship showdown between the Pirates and White Sox. However, the Colt League games that were to be covered turned out to be forfeited. As for the Pony League championship game, not a single White Sox team member bothered to show up for it. Maybe the 2015 AFPL title game will be played. How I hate forfeits. Anyhow, let's get to the stories of the games that this magazine was able to catch this past .

American Fork Coach Jay Holmstead said, "Turner Knight kept throwing strikes, and pummeled their morale through his pitching. He gave up only twoehit to them. Hagen [Holmstead] came up with two big hits for us. Tonight, we played defense, something we didn't do at Lone Peak yesterday."

The game opened with shortstop Dallin Searle, a cousin of recently un-retired Gunner Lamb, grounding out Adam "Bat Cat" Wright. Chris Christensen singled off Knight, but got caught in a double play turned up by Searle.

Hagen "Speedster" Holmstead hit a one-out single in the bottom of the first, but got put out by at second. Searle doubled into left, and my former schoolmate Ken DeMarco's grandnephew Justin DeMarco singled Searle in.

In the top of the second, Bad Old Puddy Tat Caleb Clark hit one-out single into left. In retaliation, American Fork brained the Bad Old Puddy Tats with another double play.

In the bottom of the second, Sir Turner Knight singled into left, and Seth "Needles" Taylor singled him, starting off a four-run rally.

In the top of the third, the Bad Old Puddy Tats put Wright and Skylar Neal on base, but Brighton couldn't bring any of them in. After the third, the Bad Old Putty Tats couldn't put any more runners on base.

American Fork picked up a fourth-inning run when Knight rifled a one-out single, which reeled in Jake Norton, a nephew of Lana Sitterud, who had played women's basketball for the U of U, the world's only true university, several years ago.

In the bottom of the fifth, Holmstead singled in two runs that set off a devastating five-run rally. After DeMarco had knocked in two runs, Hayden "Chief" Wood singled him in for the winning run.

As Brighton's arch rivals, the Alta Tweeties would say, those Bad Old Brighton Puddy Tats counldn't comprehend the Awesome Cavemen's hitting power.

Even though Dallin Searle singled into left, he got stuck on base.

The Loners held American Fork scoreless with another double play in the top of the second. However, in the top of the third, Seth "Needles" Taylor singled into center, and he scored on a Mick Madsen sacrifice groundout. American Fork pieked up its second run in the top of the fourth, when Searle doubled in Holmstead, who tripled into center at the start of the inning.

Holding American Fork scoreless in the top of the fifth, the Loners stole te lead from the Awesome Cavemen in the bottom of the inning. Hitting an infield single, Nate Call got singled in by Avery Gockeritz to set off a three-run rally for the Loners. The June 13 game stayed scoreless until the bottom of the second. In the an effort to prove that they were as manly as their town's world famous masculine girls, the Dons got on the scoreboard first. The Happytowners took a 3-0 lead on singles from Dylan Hall, Ty Christensen, and Carson Chappell.

Spanish Fork maintained its 3-0 until Screecher Colt "Blue" Helgson doubled in Colby "Dragon" Gagon in the top of the fourth. Happytowner Eric Stauffer answered that one-run double with one of his own in the bottom of the fourth.

A Mark single and a Gagon double revived the Screechers hopes briefly in the top of the seventh, but Spanish Fork held Juan Diego scoreless.

In Timp Colt League play at Pleasant Grove's Manila Park June 2, the Pleasant Grove Red Sox wiped out the Pleasant Grove Rangers 15-0.

Red Sox Austin Butler got the blowout started with a two-run single that launched a six-run rally for his team in the top of the first. By the time the Rangers finally shut the Red Sox down for the inning, the visiting team had acquired the momentum needed for making the contest a really short affair.

Although leadoff Ranger batter Buddy Hamblin got on base through an error, he got snagged in a double play resulting from a catch of a Caleb Conn fly ball. Jayson McKuen got on base via a walk, he got nailed in a fielder's choice play turned up by second baseman Weston Barnhardt when he scooped up a ground ball hit by Jerrick Simpson, a "distant cousin" of TV character Bart Simpson.

In the top of the second, T.J. "Wbirl" Wind hit a solo homer over the center field fence to set a half-hour rally that produced nine runs for the Red Sox. During that rally, Barnhardt tripled in a run and Korby Tanner doubled in another two. The Red Sox didn't let a single Ranger get on base in the bottom of the second.

Even though Campbell Donkersgood hit single that enabled the Red Sox to load the bases in the top of the third, the Rangers finally held them scoreless. In the bottom third, Speedy Chandler and Ben McGee each singled, giving the Rangers their only two hits of the game.

Because of the Red Sox's 15-0 lead, the game got called after the third inning.

In Pony League play at American Fork's Bus Manning Field June 3, the American Fork Cardinals pulled out a 10-9 win over the Lehi Dodgers.

As they would say at Lehi High, the game was quite riveting -- correction, ribbiting. The Dodgers showed why they were anxious to play baseball for the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, within a few years from now.

Hitting an infield single at the start of the game, Ty Wilde soon scored on a Jacob Managum sacrifice groundout. Colt "Forty-Four" Hatch tripled into left, and a Jake Peterson double scored him to improve the Dodgers' lead at 2-0. Pitcher Braige Damon, a "distant cousin" of Hollywood actor Matt Damon, struck out Jackson Hinckley, a "distant cousin" of late Mormon Church Gordy Hinckley, to retire the Dodgers to the field.

Getting on base through a walk in the bottom of the first, Damon stole home to set off an eight-run rally for the Cardinals. During the rally, Bryson Jex and Mason McQuivey each singled in run for American Fork.

With Damon letting no Dodgers get on base in the top of the second, American Fork saw Jaxton Cook slug a left-field double in the bottom of that inning and score a run during a fielder's choice play that claimed teammate Dylan Chesney, a "distant cousin" of country singer Kenny Chesnety, at second base.

Lehi refused to get washed out of Bus Manning. Hatch singled in Mangum during the top of the third and then scored on an error at third. Hinckley soon stole home on two outs soon afterwards, cutting the lead to 9-5. Zack Lind singled into left, hoping to keep the Dodger rally, but Damon grounded out to shortstop Chesney.

The Dodgers held the Cardinals scoreless in the bottom of the third, and in the top of the fourth, Mangum smacked a one-out single that scored the Wilde boy. Mangum soon stole home, heightening the Dodgers' morale. After Brenton Sudderd had doubled into left, Jake Peterson singled him in, and a Lind single scored Hinckley for the tying run.

On two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Chesney singled into left, and Cook batted him in for the winning run.

In Timp Colt League play at American Fork's Rotary Park June 7, the American Fork White Sox defeated the American Fork Red Sox 9-4.

The White Sox held the Red Sox scoreless in the bottom of the inning.

With Ryan Thompson doubling into left in the bottom of the second, Chris Williams singled him in for the first Red Sox run of the game.

A Red Sox pitcher struck out Collin Smith in hopes of shutting down the rally, but Mitch then scored on a Clark single.

Having come back out of retirement recently, Red Sox Gunner Lamb chopped a single in the bottom of the sixth, and Rasmussen singled him. Despite Thompson clubbing a center-field single for his third straight hit of the game, the White Sox didn't let the Red Sox make any more runs in the game.

In a season-ending, boys' club soccer game, the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, defeated West Jordan's Club USA 3-0 at Lehi May 24.

The two club teams comprised of players, who had gotten cut in tryouts for high school soccer teams last February. The coach for the Froggies' high school team, Jerry Prisendorf showed up to see how the castoffs from this season's Lehi soccer tryouts fared out on the AstroTurf of Pioneer Stadium.

One particular Froggie that caught Prisendorf's eye was Jaden Scholes. Backed up by his teammates, he  came up with breakaway plays that determined the game's outcome. Late in the first half, for example, he scored a goal on a breakaway play. A younger brother of Lehi Froggie girls' soccer player Makala Kauffman, Chris Kauffman scored a goal in the first half and another one in the second half to put the game away for Lehi/

Lehi goalie Trevor Hillock held Club USA scoreless in both halves. Hillock's performance didn't discourage Club USA's Brady Thorne and Jacob Bowers from putting much pressure on the Lehi defense. Backed by Froggies like Tanner Gines and Kallen Abo, the Lehi defense held well.

Lehi Coach Tom Corbitt, who had coached the Froggies to a 1998 state 3-A boys soccer title, said, "Our defense played really great, and Chris Kauffman knew how to finish his plays."
