For this week's issue, we look two girls' hoop games and a boys' basketball contest that the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, played during the week before their high school's annual Christmas break. Let's take a look at those three games. One of them turned out to be downright riveting -- correction, ribbiting contest.

Desert Hills Sudden Shocks Drain Lehi Girls 90-48 in Preseason Hoop Action Dec. 18

In a girls' basketball game at Lehi Dec. 18, the Desert Hills Thunder, AKA the Sudden Shocks, drained the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, 90-48.

The contest was close for a short time. The night's scoring opened with Sudden Shock Ashley Beckstrand getting the opening tipoff and missing a shot. Froggie Lexy Granthem rebounded it, but a strong Desert Hills defense kept Lehi from getting on the board first. A Kendyl Larson layup put Desert Hills on the board first. Froggie Lia Smith tied the game at two. The Froggies tied two more times on sbots from Smith and Shelby Gentry. A Beckstrand bucket broke the 6-6 tie and opened for the Sudden  Shocks a 10-0 scoring run that ultimately settled the game's outcome. After Desert Hills' lead had swollen to 16-6, Froggie Katy Peck scored on an offensive rebound, but the Froggies couldn't produce a strong rally. The first period ended with the Sudden Shocks leading 25-12.

After second-period scoring opened with a Rylee Jensen trey to improve the lead at 28-12, an Adelyn Clements shot opened a 6-0 scoring run that moved the Froggies within 28-18. Lehi pulled within 10 points two more times in the second period on shots from Granthem, Smith, and Clements. Desert Hills didn't let the Froggies hop any closer to it.

Beckstrand went wild in scoring the second half. So did teammate Kenzie Done. During one stretch of that half, Done sank two straight layups on steals she made within seconds of each other. Sisters Kylie and Elly Williams also provided great shooting for the Sudden Shocks.

Clements and Smith both also got hot in scoring in the final two periods, but their shooting couldn't keep the Froggies from falling farther behind. By the game's end, Lehi found itself at the bottom of a 52-point deficit. 

With nothing more to lose, Lehi Coach Brett Mays let his entire bench see action on the floor. 

Clements led Lehi with 18 points while Smith added another 11. Beckstrand led Desert Hills with 28 points while Done added another 13 and Kyle Williams 12.

Lehi Froggies Hop From Behind to Cage Maple Mountain Golden Chirpers 74-72 in Boys' Hoops Thriller

In a preseason boys' basketball game at Lehi Dec. 16, the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, hopped from behind to defeat the Maple Mountain Golden Eagles, AKA the Golden Chirpers, 74-72,

The contest saw Maple Mountain come so close to handing the Froggies their first loss of the year. At various points in the game, the Golden Chirpers led by more than 10 points. The game turned so tense that when Golden Chirper fans yelled Kerry Bartlett, the game's official scorer, over getting mixed up on a number of fouls that one Maple Mountain player, he got mad and almost walked out. Bartlett later said, "One of the assistant coaches told me, 'Kerry, if you walk out, it will be a technical on us.' So I stayed."

Bartlett's decision to stay put may have saved the Froggies down the wire, because of the closeness of the game.

It turned out to be as riveting -- correction, ribbiting as the Froggies' recent overtime win over the Provo Bulldogs, AKA the Bullpuppies.

The Dec. 16 game opened with a Bryson Anderson bucket sending the Golden Chirpers out to an early 6-0 lead. A distant cousin of former BY Zoobie basketball and Provo Bullpuppy sensation Devin Durrant, Honest Abe Durrant joined Rattle Snake Jake Dixon, Kade "Steel Blade" Poulsen, and Jaren "Smashin' Ball" Hall producing shots that kept the Golden Chirpers ahead for almost the entire first period.

Aided by two Tanner Nygren free throws, Marcus Draney, a "distant cousin" of my former schoolmate Casey Draney, hit a trey that put the Froggies within 6-5. Before Lehi could row ahead, Golden Chirper Caleb "Sharp Eyes" Johnson hit an inside shot that enabled Maple Mountain to build up a 12-7 lead. Jake Barnes scored on an offensive rebound to send his Froggies on an 11-6 scoring run led by Draney and Nygren. After a Draney shot had trimmed the lead to 18-15, Briggs Jensen hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 18 just before the buzzer.

The next period, the Golden Chirpers pulled ahead 20-18. Jensen's second trey tipped the Froggies ahead 21-20. Lehi's first lead didn't last long. It got dried up quickly by Honest Abe Durrant's hot shooting. It enabled the Golden Chirpers to stay ahead for the rest of the game. Of course, Nygren did tie the game at 23, but Durrant broke the tie. Lehi did close to Maple Mountain for a spell, but after a Draney three-point play had put the Froggies within 39-36, Anderson and Poulson led the Golden Chirpers on a 10-4 scoring run that saw Maple Mountain led by as far as 45-35 and 47-37. A "distant cousin" of pioneer rocker Chuck Berry, Casey hit an inside jump and then a trey to cut  the lead to 47-40. An Anderson bucket extended it to 49-40 at halftime.

The new half opened with Nyren hitting an inside jump and teammate Alex Pittard swishing in two free tbrows. Before Lehi could stroke any closer to Maple Mountain, the Golden Chirpers quickly realized that the Froggies had to be taken seriously.

A "distant cousin" of former Let's Make a Deal host Monty Hall, Jaren Hall pulled rebounds and fed passes to Rattle Snake Dixon for inside shots that soon produced a 57-46 lead for Maple Mountain. The Froggies didn't let themselves fall any farther behind than 11 points. Draney, Pittard, and Nygren produced key shots that triggered a long comeback for Lehi.

The Golden Chirpers stayed ahead well into the fourth quarter, thanks mainly to hot shooting from Steel Blade Poulson. Lehi kept pulling closer to Maple Mountain. In the game's final two minutes, Nygren stole the ball and passed to Blaze Nield for a three-point play that put Lehi with 69-68. Garrett "Griffy" Griffin hit a jumper that should have aced the game for the Golden Chirpers. However, Draney scored five straight points to put lead ahead 73-71. After Sammy Krommenhoek hit a free throw for Maple Mountain, Lehi Coach Bobby Barnes said, "Nygren hit a free throw in the last four seconds to clinch the game for us."

Draney led the Froggies with 33 points while Nygren added another 18. Poulsen led Maple Mountain with 20 points while Dixon added another 15 points and Honest Abe Durrant 11.

Payson Kitties Show Purrfect Performance in Girls' Hoops Game Against Lehi Froggies Dec. 17

AKA the Kitties, the Payson Lions had much to meow about in their 51-35 win on the homecourt of the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, in girls' basketball Dec. 17.

For one thing, the Kitties held the Froggies to three points in the opening quarter. Also, Alex Ford, Mikayala, Redford and Makenzie Simons each scored in double figures for Payson, AKA Kittytown. So as they say in Kittytown, the game went down as a purrfectly positive experience for the Kitties' girls' team.

The game's scoring opened with Kitty Terissa Hamilton sinking a jumper. Froggie Lexy Granthem tied the game at two, and a Terra Tahbo free throw tipped the Kitties ahead 3-2. However, a Simons set shot unleashed a 10-0 scoring run for the Kitties.

After a Ford baseline shot improved the Kitty lead at 12-3 in the second quarter, Shelby Jenkins scored on an offensive rebound to warm up the Froggies' scoring. However, Lehi couldn't reduce the Kitty lead to single digits, despite two straight Adelyn Clements buckets and a Hadlee Labrum steal late the period. By halftime, the Kitties went into their locker room, meowing proudly about the 21-9 lead that they had created.

After a bad first half, the Froggies made an honest effort to hop back into the game. Guided by Clements, Bryanna Raff, and Abby "Chijuahah" Padilla, the Froggies battled back within 35-23 by the end of the third quarter.

Sharp shooting from Ford, Simons, and Redford kept the Kitty lead in double figures all throughout the final quarter. The Kitties even stretched their lead past the 20-point mark in the quarter. Granthem managed to trim it down to 50-33 when she sank a layup on a steal near the game's end.

Clements led the Froggies with 12 points while Labrum added another five.  Redford led Kittytown with 11 points while Ford and Simons each added another 10.

For this week's issue, we look at two girls' basketball games hosted by the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies. Neither game, I'm sorry to say, was something for the Froggies to croak about. Let's leap into the details of those games.

Salem Hills Sky Tweeties Zoom Past Lehi Froggies 72-42 in Girls' Hoop Play Dec. 10

In girls' preseason basketball on Dec. 10, the Salem Hills Sky Hawks, AKA the Sky Tweeties, zoomed past the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, 72-42.

Guided by Tiffany Madson and Lauren Gustan, the Sky Tweeties outscored the Froggies 33-16 in the first half. Adelyn Clements and Lexy Granthem pushed the Froggies back within 21-12 in the seco

Spurred on by a Clements three-point play. the Froggies leaped back with 35-21. That turned out to be the closest they could get to Salem Hills. After a Hailee Hodgson trey had improved Salem Hills' lead at 38-18, Lehi couldn't shut down Madson, Gustan, and Jane Ashley Nelson. Once two straight Madson buckets had put the Sky Tweeties more than 20 points ahead, the Froggies lost their strength to jump back into the game, even though their teammate Terra Tahbo went six for six at the line.

Clements led Lehi 10 points while Granthem added another nine. Madson led the Sky Tweeties with 17 points while Gustan and Nelson each added another 10 for Salem Hills.

Brighton Bad Old Puddy Tats Drain Lehi Froggies 76-53 Dec. 12

In a girls' basketball game at Lehi Dec. 12, the Brighton Bengals, AKA the Bad Old Puddy Tats, drained the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, 76-53.

The game opened with Bad Old Puddy Tat Alyssa "Sweet" Hirschi taking a tipoff and passing to Dandy Dani Barton for a bucket.  Adelyn Clements foul shots evened the game at two, but the Bad Old Puddy Tats pounced ahead 6-2. Froggie Terra Tahbo hit a foul shot in hopes of stirring up a Lehi rally, but a Lindsey Johnson trey improved Brighton's lead at 9-3.

Shots from Clements, Lia Smith, and Abbi "Chihuahah" Padilla moved the Froggies 21-14, but Barton's hot shooting kept the Bad Old Puddy Tats' lead from dropping under the seven-point mark.

In the second quarter, two foul shots from Sweet Hirschi improved the Bad Old Puddy Tat lead at 25-14. Even though Froggie Bryanna Raff scored on an offensive rebound to cut the lead to 25-16, the Bad Old Puddy Tats had the momentum needed to push their lead back into double figures. They also held the Froggies to four points in the period. Aided by teammate Brook "Marty" Ingles, Johnson and Barton's shooting kept the Bad Old Puddy Tats ahead by more than 10 points for the entire quarter. When halftime arrived, they commanded a 39-18 lead.

The second half opened with Johnson sinking a baseline shot, indicating that the Froggies would get mauled even worse by the Bad Old Puddy Tats. Froggie Mikaylaya Nelson hit a trey that sparked a better scoring effort by Lehi in the third quarter. However, the Froggies still couldn't shut down Barton and Johnson, who enabled the Bad Old Puddy Tats to pull more than 30 points ahead. Clements, Raff, and Lexy Granthem guided Lehi in scoring. The Froggies managed to score 15 points in the quarter.

In the final quarter, the Brighton bench let its jayvees receive most of the game time. This allowed the Froggies, guided by Clements and Raff, to outscore the Bad Old Puddy Tats 20-11 in the quarter; however, Brighton had acquired such a huge lead that Clements and Raff couldn't do much damage to it.

Clements led Lehi with 21 points  while Raff added another eight.  Barton led the Bad Old Puddy Tats with 21 while Johnson added another 19, Ingles 11, and Hirschi 10.

Lehi Froggies Neuter West High Black Kittens 88-78 in Boys' Hoop Action Dec. 2

The Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, neutered the West High Panthers, AKA the Black Kittens, 88-78 in boys' hoop action at Lehi Dec. 2. The win improved the Froggies' preseason record at 2-0.

Because they were inner city kids, the Black Kittens thought they could show the Froggies the hard way to play basketball street style. However, the Froggies schooled West's players on the proper way of playing basketball Utah County style.

West High did control much of the first half. Its scoring opened with Froggie Jake Barnes hitting a set shot. Before long, Lehi commanded a 5-2 lead over the Black Kittens. A swift White Native American player, Black Kitten Riley "Railing" Kenner hit an inside shot that sparked a rally for his team. After Tanner Nygren had improved the Froggie lead at 7-5, Black Kitten Henry "Hankie" Munson produced a three-point play to tie the game at seven. An offensive rebound shot by Froggie Tyson Rupp broke the tie. Nygren then stole the ball and sank a layup.

The Froggies' 11-7 lead soon vanished. Guided by Jake "Tack" Takanaka, Railing Kenner, and Dallyn "Anvil" Kenner, the Black Kittens went on an 7-0 scoring run that gave them a 14-11 lead. The Froggies trailed for the rest of the quarter. Shots from Xavier "Xavi" Matheson gave the Black Kittens first-quarter leads as wide as 21-15. Just before the first quarter break, Nygren sank a three-pointer on a steal to cut the lead to 21-18.

The second quarter opened with a Rupp three-point play tying the game at 21. A Marty "Blythe Spirit" Cloward bucket broke the 21-21 tie to put the Black Kittens back out in front. Even though Nygren tied the game at 23, Railing Kenner hit a three-pointer to the Black Kittens back out in front. Shots from Anvil Kenner and Justus "Ah Da Peace" Murray enabled the Black Kittens to stay out in front for the rest of the half. A "distant cousin" of pioneer rock star Chuck Berry, Chase Berry joined Blaze Nield and Marcus Draney in pulling down rebounds and putting in shots to keep the Froggies in the game. The first half ended with the Black Kittens leading 42-37.

The second half opened with Jim Kauli improving the Black Kitten lead at 44-37. However, Barnes and Nygren turned really hot in scoring early in the second half. Meanwhile, the Froggies held the Black Kittens to 11 points in the quarter. That fact broke the Black Kittens' backs. After a Nygren layup tipped the Froggies ahead 46-44, they never looked back. Berry, Draney, and Barnes pulled down defensive rebounds that the Froggies quickly turned into buckets. Before long, Lehi commanded a 57-48 lead. Railing Kenner and Munson managed to cut it down to 57-52. Aided by two Draney free throws, Nield hit a corner trey to give Lehi a 62-55 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Takanaka and Ahmed Korman guided the Black Kittens back within 64-62 in the fourth quarter. Nygryn and Draney inside shots that enabled Lehi to stay narrowly ahead for the rest of the quarter. When Railing Kenner fouled out, the game went downhill for West. In the game's final two minutes, Lehi outscored the Black Kittens 8-5 to win 88-78. 

Nygren led the Froggies with 27 points while Barnes added another 13 points and Draney 10. Railing Kenner led West with 27 points.

Maple Mountain Golden Chirpers Soak Up 64-48 Win Over Lehi Froggie Girls' Hoop Team Dec. 3

In a preseason girls' basketball game at Lehi Dec. 3, the Maple Mountain Golden Eagles, AKA the Golden Chirpers, soaked up the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, 64-48.

The contest marked the opening of the Froggie girls' home season. For a little while, they did give hometown fans a good impression. Froggie Adelyn Clements, for one, hit a set shot that put her team on the scoreboard first. A very close relative of former Springville Hellion basketball star Lexi "She-Devil" Eaton, Liz "Miss Fizzy" Eaton hit a free throw to put her team on the board, and teammate Mikayala "Cupboard" Hubbard produced a three-pointplau to put Maple Mountain ahead 3-2. A short series of switches in the lead followed. Shots from Mikayla Nelson and Lexy Granthem, for instance, enabled the Froggies to leap ahead 6-5. After a Tin Lizzie Nielson shot had tipped the Golden Chirps ahead 7-6, a Lia Smith trey gave the Froggies a 9-7 advantage. Suddenly Miss Fizzy Eaton went on a scoring spree, fueled by shots from Sydnie "The Gorgeous Hellion" Wilson and The Lovely Eliasbeth Eastmond. By the end of the first quarter, the Golden Chirps commanded a 20-11 lead.

In the second quarter, Clements hit a jump shot in hopes of sparking a Froggie comeback. However, the hot shooting of Miss Fizzy Eaton scorched any chance for the Froggies leaping back into the game. The Lovely Elisabeth, Peyton"Icebox" Gibson, and Emily "General" Sherman pulled down defensive boards frequently to deny the Froggies fine chances for second shots. When a Lovely Elisabeth shot put Maple Mountain's lead at 24-13, Lehi's efforts went downhill quicker than you could say Ali Lamb Chop. By halftime, the Golden Chirpers commanded a 39-25 lead.

At the start of the third quarter, Clements produced three-point play, stirring up a Froggie effort to reduce the point spread to single digits. However, Eaton and The Lovely Elisabeth kept hitting inside shots that kept Maple Mountain ahead by more than 10 points for most of the second half. Smith, Shelby Jenkins, and Terra Tahbo  hit inside shots and pulled down defensive boards to enable Lehi to prevent the Golden Chirps from pushing their lead beyond the 20-point mark.

Early in the fourth quarter, a Nelson baseline shot and a Tahbo three-point play shoved the Froggies within 49-42. Before Lehi could leap any closer to Maple Moumtain, Eaton produced a three-point play  and hit an inside shot to enable the Golden Chirps to stay more than 10 points ahead for the rest of the game, despite efforts by Hadlee Labrum, Abby Padilla, and Smith to spark another comeback for Lehi. Eaton's shooting put the game away for Maple Mountain, and gave UVU women's hoop coach Kathy Nixon, a former Mountain View Teddy Bear hoop star, a good impression.

Before fouling out, Clements became Lehi's top scorer with 12 points while Smith added another seven. Eaton finished the night as the game's highest scorer with 29 points while The Lovely Elisabeth added another seven.

Herriman Pretty Ponies Stampede Past Lehi Froggie Grapplers in Dec. 4 Dual Meet

In a Region Four dual wrestling meet at Lehi Dec. 4, the Herriman Mustangs, AKA the Pretty Ponies, defeated the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, 53-21.

The Pretty Ponies dominated the meet from the first 10 minutes. In the 106 and 113 weight class matches respectively, Pretty Ponies Easton "Steel Fingers" Halliday and Fantastic Drake Hale pinned Froggies Chase "Iron Lace" Heaton and Mike "The Marvelous"Greigo respectively in less than a minute.

Froggie Stick Mick Jamiyanday pinned his 120-pound foe, Thrillin' Dylan Chavez, 36 seconds into their, cutting the lead to 12-6.

In the first period of the 126 weight class match, Froggie Dennis "Super Menace" Fyffle wrestling Pretty Pony Silver Horseshoes Logan to a scoreless tie. However, in the second period, Silver Horseshoes posted a 3-0 lead over Super Menace, then pinned that Froggie five seconds before the round's buzzer could sound.

A 132-pound Froggie, Austin "Ramrod" Hullinger managed to squirm his way out of situations in which his Pretty Pony opponent, Cade "The Spade" Halliday almost pinned him. Even though Ramrod managed to last the full six regulation minutes on the mat, The Spade still defeated him 9-0.

In the 138 weight class match, Pretty Pony Jaron "The Scarlet Baron" Jensen took a 6-1 lead over Tony "Whirlwind" Mackintosh. The Scarlet Baron came close few times to pinning Whirlwind, but the Froggie proved slippery enough to prolong the match. It ended with The Scarlet Baron winning 16-3.

Froggie Dalton "The Outlaw" Rice snapped the Pretty Ponies' winning streak during his 145 weight class match against Cole "Diamonds" Clark. Diamonds scored a second-period reversal to break a scoreless tie. However, The Outlaw esccaped Diamonds' clutches and took him down to take a 3-2 lead. The Outlaw held his foe scoreless through the rest of the match. It ended with The Outlaw winning on a technical fall.

The 152 and 160 weight class matches saw Pretty Ponies Calton "The Scabbard" French and Taylor "Pins" Borges pin Tyler "The Ram" Tahbo and Zach "Sir Bear" Lare respectively.

In the 170 weight class match, Froggie Caden "Stuka Bomber" Calton took an early 2-1 lead ovef Tyler "Wolfhound" Scherdimon. Soon, Wolfhound pulled ahead 4-2 on a reversal. Stuka Bomber battled back within 5-4, but he couldn't regain the lead. Wolfhound won 8-4.

A 182-pound Froggie, Brandon "The Barrel" Terrell came close to losing to Big Bad  Leroy Dansie. However, in the third period, The Barrel reversed Big Bad Leroy after the Pretty Pony had posted a 4-2 lead. The Barrel pinned Big Bad LeRoy.

PrettyPonies Shane "The Wrecking Crane" French and Wade "The Swift Blade" French pinned Weston "Muscles" Anderton and Carson "The Sword Fish" Torrell  to stretch Herriman's lead to 53-17.

In the 285 weight class match, Froggie Rackin' Bracken Stringam overpowered Stone "Pony" Sagal to give Lehi something to croak about.

Layton Jabbers Unhorse Lehi Froggies in Girls' Hoop Play Dec. 5

In a non-league girls' basketball game played at Lehi Dec. 5, the Layton Lancers, AKA the Jabbers, unhorsed the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, 65-26.

The night's scoring opened with a Sunnie Martinez bucket sending the Jabbers charging out to a 10-0. Though an Addie Pearson bucket put the Froggies on the board, the Jabbers still held them to three points in the first quarter.

While the Froggies were ice cold in scoring in the opening quarter, it saw Jabber Clara "Nutcracker" Wood become really hot in scoring. Nothing Lehi could do could shut her down. Wood eventually finished the night as the game's highest scorer with 26 points while teammate Hailey "Hound" Bassett added another 10.

Lehi finally became warm in the second quarter. Lexy Granthem hit two straight inside shots, and teammate Lia Smith hit a trey to fuel a 7-2 scoring that put Lehi within 16-10. Wood went on another shooting spree that enabled the Jabbers to get another double-digit lead. Treys from Wood and Olivia Borges gave Layton permanent control of the lead. By halftime, the Jabbers commanded a 31-15 lead.

During the second half, the Jabbers held the Froggies to 11 points. In going 3-4 at the foul line, Terra Tahbo became Lehi's top scorer with nine points while Granthem added another eight. A Hailey "Hound" Basset bucket put the Jabber lead at 37-17 in the third quarter, and Layton stayed more than 20 points ahead for the rest of the night.

Lehi Froggies Survive Double-Overtime Thriller Against Jordan Plowblows Dec. 6

In a boys' preseason basketball game played at Lehi Dec. 6, the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, outlasted the Jordan Beetdiggers, AKA the Plowboys, 93-87 in a double-overtime game that was one of the most riveting -- correction, ribbiting contests for this months.

Tanner Nygren went down as one of the Froggies' big guns in the game. His shooting helped the Froggies leap past the Plowboys, a traditional 5-A boys' basketball superpower. The game opened with Froggie Alex Pittard receiving the opening tipoff and passing to Nygren for a bucket. Plowboy Cal "Haywire" Hayward tied the game at two, but before Jordan could pull ahead, Nygren hit a tie-breaking trey. Plowboy Cal "Haywire" Haywood hit a tying trey in response, but a Tyson Rupp three-pointer put Lehi back out in front. A nephew of former Awesome American Fork Caveman sophomore basketball player Cal Monson Jr., Tanner Monson hit a three-pointer to tie the game at eight.

With Nygen breaking the 8-8 deadlock, the Froggies went on a 6-0 scoring run. Two Josh Morris foul shots cut the Froggie lead to 14-10, but Jake Barnes hit a three-pointer that launched a 7-4 scoring run for the Froggies. Two straight Monson buckets moved Jordan within 19-14 in the period's final minute. Just before the first quarter break, Marcus Draney fed a pass to Rupp for a buzzer-beating jumper.

In the second quarter, Tanner Monson put on an offensive performance that would have made his uncle Cal proud. Well, it made the Plowboy fans proud. Tanner's highly accurate shooting put the Plowboys within 26-23 during a 9-5 scoring run that Jordan went on in the early second quarter. After Jordan had pulled within three points of the Froggies, Nygren sank a layup. Blaze Nield and Draney took command of the boards, pulling down key defensive rebounds that enabled the Froggies to stay narrowly ahead of the Plowboys. Three Brady Christensen foul shots created a 40-30 lead for Lehi just before halftime.

In the third quarter, Barnes hit a trey that extended the lead to 43-40. With two Rupp foul shots improving it at 45-30, the Froggies looked as though they were going to wash the Plowboys out of the Lehi gym. However, Monson became more accurate in shooting during the third quarter than he was in the second. Monson's shots paced a 15-10 scoring run that put Jordan within 50-45. A "distant cousin" of pioneer rocker Chuck Berry, Chase Berry scored on a a steal put the lead at 52-45. Berry's key theft didn't discourage Monson any. He hit two foul shots to cut the lead to 52-47. The period ended with a Froggie shot bouncing off the front end of the rim.

Inspired by Monson's third-quarter performance, the Plowboys opened the fourth quarter with a Hayward bucket that opened a 9-4 scoring run for Jordan. It soon tied the game at 56 on two Spence Curtis foul shots. Pulling down an offensive rebound, Rupp passed to Nygren for a tie-breaking layup.  Jordan tied the game at 58, and two Hayward foul shots tipped the Plowboys ahead 60-58. With two Barnes foul shots tying the game at 60, the Froggies battled desperately to hop back out in front. However, the Plowboys maintained a lead as wide as three points for a spell. Finally, a Nygren trey tipped the Froggies back out in front 67-66. Two Draney foul shots gave the Froggies a 69-66 advantage in the last minute, but the momentum kept changing hands quickly. A Hayward trey put Jordan within 70-69 in the last 10 seconds. Two Nygren foul shots stretched Lehi's lead at 72-69 at 0:09.4. Just as the Froggies were about to swim back into their locker room as three-point winners, Plowboy Sammy Ashman hit a trey that forced the game into overtime.

The Froggies almost folded in the first overtime. It opened with Pittard breaking the 72-72 deadlock on a layup. Aided by a Stockon "Nevada" Christensen free throw, Hayward hit two foul shots that tipped Jordan ahead 75-74. The lead changed hands frequently. After a Nield foul shot tied the game 78, Draney swished in two charity free throws to put Lehi ahead 80-78. Nevada Christensen nailed a trey that put Jordan ahead 81-80. A Draney foul shot evened the game at 81. With Monson hitting a tie-breaking trey in the last 12 seconds of Overtime 1, he looked as though he would be the big hero for Jordan. However, Draney hit three foul shots that forced the game into a second overtime.

Paced by four Draney free throws in the second overtime, the Froggies went on a 6-0 scoring run. Monson hit a trey in hopes tipping the momentum back to the Plowboys' favor. Free throws from Nygren and Rupp clutched the game for Froggies, improving their preseason record at 4-0.

Nygren led the Froggies with 34 points while Draney added another 14 and Rupp 11. Monson led Jordan with 29 points while Hayward added another 25 and Curtis 13.

For this week's issue, we look at how well American Fork, Lehi, and Westlake's swim teams did at last weekend's Viewmont Viking Thanksgiving Invitational. I'll let you know right now that the Vicious Viewmont Vikings won both the boys and girls' divisions of the two-day swim meet. Still, American Fork, Lehi, and Westlake did produce individual champions at the meet. Let's dive into that story.

Awesome AF Cavewomen, Lehi Froggies Win 2nd-Place Trophies at Viewmont Viking Thanksgiving  Invitational

At the Nov. 21-22 Viewmont Viking Thanksgiving Invitational, the Awesome American Fork Cavewomen and the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, received second-place trophies in the girls and boys' divisions of the swim meet.

AKA the Vicious Vikings, Viewmont swimmers won both divisions convincingly. Viewmont bested American Fork 417-342 for the girls' championship trophy. The Vicious Vikings dried up Lehi 633-309 for the boys' first-place trophy.

American Fork and Westlake took fourth and fifth respectively in the boys' division. Westlake took fifth in the girls' division, which saw the Froggies take 11th.

The Vicious Vikings' domination of both categories gave strong idea that they would definitely win both the state 5-A girls and boys' crowns this coming February. Viewmont's tremendous depth in great talent didn't stop the Awesome Cavemen, Awesome Cavewomen, Froggies, and Westlake Thunder, AKA the Shockers, from doing swell at the meet.

Taking third in the boys' 200-yard individual medley,Shocker Jonny Shawgo won the boys' 100-yard butterfly. Awesome Caveman Stevie Okleberry won the 100-yard freestyle while finishing second in the boys' 200-yard freestyle, and he tied Woods Cross Wildkitten Mitchel Hawley as the meet's second highest individual scorer with 45 points. Lehi's Tyler Blackburn took fourth, Austin McGrew eighth, Johnny Morris ninth in the boys' 200-yard freestyle. The boys' 100-yard freestyle saw Froggies Johnny Morris take fourth and Gavin Doel ninth.

While the Awesome Cavewomen didn't produce any champions in any event, they used their huge depth in swimmers to earn their second-place finish.

The Awesome Cavewomen took fourth in the girls' 200-yard medley relay and third in the girls' 400-yard freestyle relay. American Fork took third in the boys' 400-yard freestyle and fourth in the boys' 200-yard medley relay, and ninth in the boys' 200-yard freestyl.

American Fork's depth produced big points for it in the girls' 200-yard individual medley. In that event, Awesome Cavewomen McKenna King took fourth, Jess Moberly seventh, and Sam Buker 10th. Shocker Maddie Louder took second in the girls' 200-yard invidual medley.

In the girls' 100-yard butterfly, Moberly took ninth, Annemerie Jensen 10th, and Anja Wright 111th.

For the Awesome Cavewomen in the girls' 500-yard freestyle, Amy Baker finished fourth, Shelby Graves fifth, and Stacey Clark 11th. Clark, by the way, took seventh in the girls' 200-yard freestyle.

In the boys' 500-yard freestyle, Blackburn took second while Awesome Cavemen Noah "The Ark" Housely finished eighth.

Lehi shined in divisions of the 50-yard freestyle. On the girls' side, Storie O'Brien took 10th and her fellow Froggie Kim Petersen took fourth in the boys' version of the 50-yard freestyle. O'Brien took fifth  in the girls' 100-yard backstroke.

Lehi Coach Dennis Meyering said, "They're making a lotg of progress. Ty Blackburn broke his brother's school record of 4:53 in the 500 free. Ty's new record is 4:51. Tanner Johnson dropped 17 seconds and Austin McGhie 21 seconds in the 500 free. Ty and John Morris are definitely going to be going to state."

American Fork Coach Kathy King said, "Our A and B relay teams cut down their teams quite a bit at this meet. We have a huge field of dedicated ninth-graders like Amy Buker. Amy Wright received the meet's Most Inspirational Swimmer Award, for the great positive attitude that she showed after having lost her father recently to cancer."

Awesome AF Caveharriers Dominate at 2014 Pre-Footlocker Meet Nov. 8

As a follow-up to their state in both the girls and boys' divisions of last month's state 5-A cross country championship races, the Awesome American Fork Cavewomen and Cavemen dominated both divisions of the Nov. 8 Pre-Footlocker Invitational hosted by their school.

No team scores were kept during the invitational, which saw runners from 3-A to 5-A division schools racing together. Juab Wasp harrier Kashley Carter won the girls' division. Awesome Caveman Casey "Corporal" Clinger, a sophomore won the boys' division.

His picking up the boys' division's first-place trophy was a great way for him to show that despite finishing second at the state 5-A meet, he could still come out on top in a boys' race. Teammate Zach Jacklin had defeated him for the first-place spot at the state meet.

Holding his championship trophy, Clinger said, "This was a great way to tune up for racing in the Nike Southwest Invitational in Casa Grande, Arizona. Last year, I placed 25th at that meet in a time of 16:01."

American Fork boys' coach Timo Mostert said, "Zach and Casey pace the team in their races. Those two guys race so well that either of them can beat the other on any given day. Zach bested him at state, and today Casey defeated Zach. Our boys raced really well. Now our varsity runners are going to be focusing in on Nike in a few weeks from now."

With Clinger having finished first and Jacklin second, the Awesome Cavemen dominated the race's top 30 spots. Hagen Harmer finished seventh, Jacob Chase 11th, Dan Bentley 13th, and Conner Hoopes 23rd. As for the other Awesome Cavemen in the boys' race, Parker Rasmussen took 32nd, Jason Manning 45th, Tony Jeffs 55th, Jared Anderson 70th, Cole Phillippi 75th, Parker Barris 895th, Tyler Garrcik 109, Coollin Nielson 149th, Nate Baird 170th, and Parker Williams 175th.

In the girls' division, American Fork's Cami Squires took third, Sammy Hollingsworth third,  Nikki Smith fifth, Maddie Bench sixth. Lexie Green 13th, Katie Bradshaw 16th, Katie Cornell 21st, Katy Phillipi 22nd, Anna Gunther 25th, Kendra Heath 27th,  Bonnie Schellenberg 34th, Madison Marrott 39th, Ashlyn Lee 61st, Camille Garrett 63rd, Mallory Finch 65th, Abbi Lamb 85th, Stormy Watson 91st, Andie Weight 98th, Hailey Smith 101st, Jessica Anderson 103rd, Heather Bergson 104th, Kaylie Green 108th, scout McMillan 111th, Melissa Smith, 121st, Candace Lundahl 129th, Lara Reading 132nd, Hannah Simmons 133rd, Meg Ipson 139, and Emma Bench 144th in the girls' race.

American Fork Coach Bruno Hunziker said, "For our varsity girls, this meet was a great tuneup for the Great Southwest Region in Casa Grande. Cami Squires and Sammy Hollingsworth had frequently traded the No. 1 running spot. That was not too surprising today. The biggest surprise today was Nikki Smith, a senior. All season long, she's been our No. 6 girl. To see her finish as our No. 3 runner today was absolutely fantastic."

AKA the Froggies, the Lehi PIoneers and the Ferocious Pleasant Grove Vikings also had runners compete at Pre-Footlocker. Both schools had runners finish in the top 30 in or both of the races.

For the Froggies in the girls' division, Maddy Kauffman, a "distant cousin" of late comedian Andy Kauffman, finished 12th. In the boys' division, Froggies Sean Haggart took ninth, Conner Arnell 17th, Brady Taylor 24th, and Tommy Boy Heaps 30th.

The Ferocious Vikings had two runners finish in the top 30 of the boys' division. Spencer Palmer took 18th and Zac Slater 29th. Pleasant Grove Coach Mark Morrison said, "They were two of three boys who represented us at state. Tanner Nelson was the third one, and he placed 38th at the state meet. He sat this one out, because of a leg injury. We're expecting him to be back for Footlocker over in Walnut, Calif., within a few weeks. The meet is going to be held at San Antonio College."

For Pleasant Grove in the girls' division, Skye Jeppson took 38th, Haley Tanner 49th, Kate Spackman 50th. Mia Rahl 118th, and Becky Gilbert 140th. Morrison said, "Jeppson was a late-comer to our team. She was a move-in from Blanding, Utah. She joined our program after the school year had started."

Lehi Froggies Wash Away Awesome AF Cavespikers in 3-Game Volleyball Match Oct. 14

In Region Four volleyball action at Lehi Oct. 14, the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, defeated the Awesome American Fork Cavewomen in just three games by scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-20.

Although Game 1 opened with a Kassidy Roberts kill putting the Awesome Cavewomen on the board first, Faitato'a Faleao and Ali Greenwood put together an effective offense that created a 6-2 lead for the Froggies. Kassidy, aided by teammates Abbie Saint Vincent and Kailey Buckner, guided the Awesome Cavewomen back within 6-5. Rylin Roberts and Mikayla Upham delivered hard hits to the American Fork center, enabling the Froggies to leap out to a 16-7 lead. It swelled as wide as 19-11. Jacey Whitehead guided American Fork 23-15, but it couldn't get any closer.

American Fork built up a 4-1 lead in Game 2. However, Faleao stirred up another rally for the Froggies, and they jumped ahed 5-4. American Fork did try hard to fight back into the game. Lauren "Itchy" Ritchie joined Kassidy in putting on a strong performance at the net for the Awesome Cavewomen. A Kayla Taylor tip put American Fork within 21-17. Rylin Roberts hits spurred the Froggies on to a 25-17 win.

The third game started out as a nip-and-tuck battle. Once the Froggies broke a 7-7 draw, they built up strong momentum that American Fork couldn 't break. Still, Ritchie and Buckner did guide American Fork back to tie the game at 16. American Fork missed a serve. Kara Moore, Faleao, and Greenwood guided the Froggies in capitalizing on that service error. The Froggies won the game 25-20.

Awesome AF Cavekickers' Soccer Season End in Quarterfinal Loss to Bad Old Brighton Puddy Tats

In a 5-A girls' soccer state quarterfinal played in Cottonwood Heights Oct. 16, the Brighton Bengals, AKA the Bad Old Puddy Tats, defeated the Awesome American Fork Cavewomen 4-1.

The loss ended the four-season run of Margie Wilson Stringam's days as head coach for the Awesome Cavewomen's soccer season. She said, "I had decided last year this fall would be final season of coaching soccer for AF. I wanted to leave at the same time that the girls, whom had started out as ninth-graders during my first year as head coach, would be seniors. As much I loved coaching soccer, it's a hard thing to do when you're raising a family like I'm doing.

"I was proud of my girls during all four seasons that I coached them. They did not fall down once, especially this year. I am confident that the girls ' soccer program will be going strong for years to come."

American Fork went into the Brighton game fresh off a 7-0 win over the Granger Lancers Oct. 14. That game marked the second time in Cavewomen soccer history that American Fork had won a state playoff game in the past 25 years.

For a little while, the Awesome Cavewomen looked as though they would be playing in the state semifinals at RSL Salt Lake's Sandy Stadium Oct. 21. Thirteen minutes into the Brighton quarterfinal, Awesome Cavewoman Brooklyn Voglesberg booted in the game's first goal from 40 yards out. "It was a beautiful shot," Stringam said.

The Bad Old Puddy Tats didn't let the Awesome Cavewomen enjoy their 1-0 lead for long. American Fork drew a foul inside its penalty box. Stringam said, "I didn't agree with the calling of that foul, but there was nothing more I can do about it."

Bad Old Puddy Tat Taum "O'Neal" Lefler kicked in the penalty shoot to tie the game at one. The score stayed deadlocked at 1-1 until the early second half. The Bad Old Puddy Tats went on a scoring spree that period.

In its first five minutes, Bad Old Puddy Tat Rachel "Owlly" Powelly scored the tie-breaking shot from inside the Awesome Cavewomen's penalty box. The game's score stayed at 2-1 for most of the period.

Awesome Cavewomen Kassidy Dibb, Laken Flinders, T.J. "Tommy Gun" Thompson, and Brielle Stiltson stirred strong efforts for at least tying the game.  However, Bad Old Puddy Tat Jade Bayer did not let one American Fork shot zip past her.

A cousin of former American Fork baseball player Brock Lamb, Audrey Searle and Emily Houston helped Awesome Cavewoman Kenzi Jorgensen in keeping the Bad Old Puddy Tats from jacking up the score until the game's final 10 minutes. During those minutes, Bad Old Puddy Tat Angie "Tiny" Timm scored two straight goals to put the game away for Brighton.

As Brighton's arch rivals, the Alta Tweeties would say, too bad those Brighton Bad Old Puddy Tats do come out on top at times.

Lehi Froggies Best Riverton Silverpups in 3-Game Match Oct. 21

Iln a Region Four volleyball finale at Lehi Oct. 21, the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, defeated the Riverton Silverwolves, AKA Silverpups, by scores of 25-20, 25-15, 25-20.

Game 1 went down as a seesaw battle. The Froggies took a 2-0 lead at the start of that round. Led by Tienna "Ah Choo" Afu, the Silverpups quickly took a 4-3 lead. The lead changed hands frequently as Ali Greenwood, Faitao'a Faleao, and Mikayla Upham registered hits that frustrated the Silverpups. Shayla Kartchner and Lauren Muhlstein kept the Silverpups in the game, however, through delivering kills that enabled them to tie the game at eight. A Greenwood kill broke the 8-8 deadlock, and the Froggies soon had a 14-8 lead. However, Kartchner and Afu's hits permitted the Silverpups to howl back within 21-19. A Faleao kill slowed them down at that point. A Greenwood set gave the Froggies a 25-20 win.

Even though the Silverpups secured a 2-1 lead at the start of Game 2, Faleao, Rylin Roberts, and Greenwood dominated the front row while Sydney White came up with a string of serves that gave tbe Froggies strong control of the game. Once the Froggies secured a 14-8 lead, they never looked back, despite strong offensive performances by Silverpups Lexi Averette and Brittney Ennis. Once the Froggies had secured a 16-6 lead, a double-digit win for them in Game 2 became a foregone conclusion.

In the third game, an Allie Gibson kill tied the game at two for the Silverpups. However, the Froggies soon built an 6-2 lead through the hits of Greenwood, Roberts, Upham, White, Amber Lamborn, and Kara Moore. Averette, Afu, Kartchner, Muhlstein, and  Calissa "Camelot" Candalott came up with hits that allowed the Silverpups to get back within 20-17. After an Averette kill had  whacked the lead down to 20-17, Faleao came up with crucial hits for Lehi. After a Kartchner block had put the Silverpups within 21-20, they missed a serve. That miss gave the Froggies the momentum to pull out a 25-20 victory on a Faleao kill.

For this week's issue, we look at a three-game volleyball match that the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, had hosted against the Westlake Thunder, AKA the Shockers. Despite going on three rounds, the match was still riveting -- correction, all the way through. We will also look at how the Riverton Silverwolves, AKA the Silverpups, howled past the Froggies' football team, Oct. 3. Finally, we will see what my Awesome American Fork Cavemen did to the Froggies in Lehi's final home game at Pioneer Stadium Oct. 10. Let's get to the stories of those contests.

Lehi Froggies Quiet Westlake Shockers in 3-Game Volleyball Match Oct. 9

In Region Four girls' volleyball action at Lehi Oct. 9, the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, quieted the Westlake Thunder, AKA the Shockers, in three games by scores of 25-16, 25-15, 25-19.

The first game, the Froggies and the Shockers battled to ties of 1-1 and 2-2. A Tessa Riffle tip tilted the Shockers ahead 3-2. They by as far as 6-3. However, Rylin "Rylie" Roberts, a "distant cousin" of Hollywood actress Emma Roberts, registered two straight kills that motivated the Froggies into hoping ahead 9-6. That didn't stop the Shockers from staying close to Lehi. Blocks by Riffle and my distant cousin Savannah Domgaard kept the Shocks close for much of Gamed 1. However, after the Shockers had pulled within 13-10, Mikayal Upham delivered a series of hits that energized the Froggies. They built up a lead of 22-11, and they never looked back.

In the second game, Roberts' hitting helped the Froggies to create a 7-1 lead. However, Riffle and Tiana Naylor triggered a comeback for the Shockers. Riffle's serves guided the Shockers within 14-11. However, Roberts and Faleao delivered some hits that created a 19-12 lead for Lehi. The Shockers couldn't put together an effective comeback effort.

In the third game, the Froggies took a 6-0 lead over the Shockers. Domgaard, Naylor and Riffle didn't let the Froggies hop farther ahead. Through Naylor, Domgaard, and Riffle's hitting, Westlake stormed back within 15-14. A Faleao block prevented Westlake from tying the game. Still, the Shockers stayed close to Lehi. Westlake battled back within 21-17. A service error tripped Westlake up. Aided by Faleao's hitting, a Roberts kill scored match point for Lehi.

Riverton Silverpups Howl Past Lehi Froggies 32-13 in Oct. 3 Football Action

In a Region Four football showdown at Lehi's Pioneer Stadium Oct. 3, the Riverton Silverwolves, AKA the Silverpups, howled past the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, 32-13.

The contest would have been riveting -- correction, ribbiting all the way through if it weren't for two Froggie turnovers that allowed the Silverpups to drain Lehi completely in the second half. Those two turnovers included an interception and a fumble. Before we dwell on those two things, let's take a look at how well the Froggies performed against the Silverpups in the first half.

It opened with Froggie Caden Calton returning a kickoff to the Lehi 32-yard line. Despite a five-yard pass fired by quarterback Calvin Miles, the Silverpups prevented the Froggies from picking up a first down.

From their 45-yard line, the Silverpups opened their first drive of the night. Quarterback Korbyn "Bacon" Boucom tried guiding the Silverpups deep into Froggie territory. However, the Froggie defensive line kept his top running back Zac "Tex" Lallis from picking up a first down.

The Silverpups had better luck on their next drive. Riverton punt returner Keaton "Busta" Kimball rushed a punt clear to the Lehi 16-yard line. Riverton fans howled over immediate expectations of their team scoring a touchdown. Brakin Stringam's stopping Lallis at the Froggie 6-yard line caused the Silverpup attack to stall. So Riverton opted for a field goal attempt. Gavin "Gravy" Slack kicked a 25-yard field goal to open the game's scoring.

After snuffing Lehi's third drive in the quarter, the Silverpups made another try for a TD, but the Froggie defense kept Riverton stuck on its 3-0 lead through the rest of the quarter.

In its closing minutes, the Froggies staged a strong drive deep into Silverpup territory. Long carries by Calton and Spencer "Crow" Blackham propelled the Froggies clear to the Riverton 35-yard line by the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter opened with Miles losing the ball while getting sacked. Froggie line Braden Goldfinch recovered the fumble on the Silverpup 35-yard line. The offensive fumble recovery ironically robbed Lehi of the momentum it needed for sustaining the drive, and the Froggies punted to the Silverpup 2-yard line.

The Silverpups quickly got out of the hole that the Froggies had expected to keep them quarantined in. Taking a handoff from Boucom, Lallis raced 95-yards to the Froggie 6-yard line, where Brandon Tayofa stopped him cold. The long run set the stage for an increase in the Silverpup lead. After Lallis had carried the ball to the Froggie 2-yard line, Boucom passed to Sam "Big D" Davis for a touchdown. The Silverpups the scored a two-point conversion.

The Froggies didn't let that touchdown go unanswered. After Froggie Kade Moore had returned the kickoff to the Lehi 35-yard line, Calton and Blackham took turns at making long carries that placed Lehi on the Silverpup 24-yard line. There, Miles handed off to Calton, who raced around to the left for a touchdown at 6:04. The Silverpups prevented Lehi from scoring an extra point.

The game's closeness became a thing of the past in the third quarter. With Silverpup Samoa "Some More" Tolalvao returning the second half's opening kickoff to the Riverton 47-yard line, Riverton soon delivered a nasty blow to Lehi's defense. Alex Johnson, Cam Christensen, and Lallis each zipped through the Froggies' defense to gain much yardage. Before you could say Ali Lamb Chop, the Silverpups reached the Froggie 6-yard line. Taking a handoff from Boucom, Lallis curved around to the right to score a touchdown, which Slack frosted with a successful extra-point kick.

Lehi attempts at recovering from that TD collapsed through the Froggies fumbling away the ball on their 21-yard line. On the next play, Lallis raced the pigskin 21-yards into the Froggie end zone during 5:30.

With the Silverpup defense preventing the Froggies from picking up a first down, Boucom fired a 37-yard pass to Kimball to put the Silverpups inside the Froggie 20-yard zone. Taking a handoff from Boucom, Christensen raced 19 yards into the end zone. After Slack kicked in another extra point, the Froggies shut down the Riverton offense for the night. The abrupt improvement in Lehi's defense came too late to save the Froggies.

In the fourth quarter, Lehi attempted to stage a big rally. Aided by a passing interference penalty called against Riverton, long, Calton carries put Lehi inside the Silverpups' 20-yard zone. At 9:29, Calton raced 13 yards into the end zone, cutting the lead to 32-12. Jacob Kesler booted in an extra point.

Taking over quarterbacking duties late in the period, Froggie Connor Meinzer guided the Lehi offense deep into Silverpup territory. Suddenly, Lallis picked off a pass and raced to the Froggie 41-yard line. Lehi stopped the Silverpups there at the end of the game.

Awesome AF Cavemen Drain Lehi 35-14 in Region 4 Football Action Oct. 10

The Awesome American Fork Cavemen drained the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, 35-14 in a Region Four football game played at Lehi Oct. 10.

The contest's outcome not only improved my Awesome Cavemen's chances at winning the league championship, but it was also an atonement for a home loss that they had suffered at the webbed hands of the Froggies last fall.

American Fork Coach Aaron "Lazar" Behm said, "Tonight improves our record at 7-1. Our defense kept us in the game in the first three quarters. We scored on our first two drives of the second half."

The first half opened with Awesome Caveman Garrison Spencer returning a kickoff to the American Fork 30-yard line. The Froggie defense soon compelled American Fork to have Zach "Wisecracker" Katoa punt to the Froggies. Defensive linemen like Riley Phillips kept running back Caden Calton from gaining much yardage during Lehi's first march of the night.

The Awesome Caveman defense held Lehi scoreless throughout the first half. Meanwhile, late in the first quarter, Spencer returned a Lehi punt to the Froggie 6-yard line. On the next play, Katoa scored a touchdown for the Awesome Cavemen. Jackson Nadauld kicked in an extra point.

Lehi received good midfield position at the end of the first quarter, but the Awesome Cavemen forced the Froggies to punt.

With quarterback Tanner Smith passing 28 yards to Katoa at the start of the second quarter, the Awesome Cavemen looked as though they would score early in the period. However, three straight incomplete passes slowed them down to  a halt.

Jim Empey and Phillips sacking Froggie quarterback Calvin Miles midway through the quarter broke whatever momentum Lehi had been accumulating that period.

The half's final five minutes left Awesome Caveman fans grunting for joy and Froggie supporters croaking in frustration. Smith's long passes to Nate Honey and Coleson Worley, a "distant cousin" of TV actress Joanne Worley, placed American Fork on the Froggie 11-yard line. Taking a handoff from Smith, Katoa raced away for a touchdown at 5:49. Thanks to a long carry by Honey to the Froggie 14-yard line, Katoa scored another touchdown on a three-yard carry during 1:29.

With the Froggies still unable to score on American Fork during the third quarter, the Awesome Cavemen put the game away that period. The score stayed at 21-0 until 2:55 in the third quarter, when Smith scored a touchdown on a one-yard keeper play. The quarterback scored another touchdown 30 seconds before the final quarter-break. Lehi didn't let American Fork enter the end zone again.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Froggie Caden Calton raced 65 yards for a touchdown, which Jacob Kesler frosted with an extra-point kick. Soon afterwards, Froggie tight end Cody Frampton, a "distant cousin" 1970's rocker Pete Frampton, caught a six-yard touchdown pass fromm quarterback Howler Larson, and Kesler booted a PAT kick to end the night's scoring.

American Fork won the Region Four championship the following Wednesday by sinking the Ferocious Pleasant Grove Vikings 30-10 at home.

Lehi Froggies Take Down Lone Peak Loners in 5-Game Volleyball Match Sept. 23

The five-game volleyball match that the Lehi Pioneers won at home against the Lone Peak Knights, AKA the Loners, Sept. 23 went down as one of the most riveting -- correction, ribbiting contests between those two teams. The contest presented a rivalry as fierce as the one shared by the Loners and the Ferocious Pleasant Grove Vikings. Lehi won by the contest by scores 14-25, 19-25, 25-16, 29-27, 15-8.

In the first game, kills by Emily Lewis, a close relative of BY Zoobie football legend Chad Lewis, enabled the Loners to take an early 3-1 lead. Guided by Rylin Roberts, To'a Faleao, and Mikayla Upham, the Froggies jumped back to take a 6-4 lead. A very close relative of former American  Fork sports legends Colby Evans and Brittany Risher, Hayley Evans delivered amazing serves that enabled Jaysa "What Da" Funk to register hits that tied the game at six. 

A Froggie double block quickly lead to Lehi commanding a 9-6 lead. In serving an ace, Loner McCall Kinkade, a "distant cousin" of late painter Tom Kinkade, stirred up a rally that enabled Lone Peak to eventually pull ahead 12-10. Even thought a Faleao kill put the Froggies within 12-11, the Loners didn't let them catch up. Lewis, Kinkade, Ally Anderson, and Maikilla Jarema registered a string of devastating hits know the Froggies out of rhythm. 

Funk's serving produced a 2-1 lead for the Loners in the second game. A "distant cousin" of Hollywood actress Julia Robert, Rylin Roberts, Upham, and Amber "This is Your Night" Lamborn pooled their serving and hitting skills together to produce a 3-2 lead for the Froggies. However, Lewis and Jarema took firm control at the net. Those two Loners' hitting soon produced a 14-6 lead for their team. A "distant cousin" of fairy tale character Snow White, Froggie Sydney White tried to orchestrate a rally for the Froggies. However, their offense got stuck while Lone Peak built up a 20-10 lead. Just the Loners looked as though they would be coasting to a double-digit win. Upham, Roberts, and Kara Moore organized a strong comeback that Jarema tried to slow down. After the Froggies had pulled within 24-19, a missed Lehi serve gave the Loners the win.

The match looked as though the Loners would dry up the Froggies in three games. However, a Faleao kill gave Lehi a 2-1 lead. Funk and Kinkade's hitting kept the Loners close on the Froggies' heels. Finally, the Kinkade's hitting produced a 14-12 lead for the Loners. They looked as though they would put the Froggies away. However, Moore's serving tipped those web-footed Lehites ahead 16-15. Despite strong efforts by Jarema, Lamborn took control of the net. Teammate Kylie Jacklin gave her much back up, and a Faleao kill gave the Froggies a 25-16 win.

The fourth game opened with the Loners taking a 2-0 lead. Jacklin registered two straight kills that tied the game at two. After Faleao made a tie-breaking kill, Jacklin served an ace that put Lehi ahead 4-3. Leads continued to change hands quicker than you could say Ali Lamb Chop. Roberts, Jacklin, Upham, Faleao, and Faleao held their own against Jarema, Lewis, Funk, Kinkade, and Anderson. Finally, Roberts registered a kill that won the game for Lehi 29-27.

Losing the fourth game destroyed the Loners' morale. They played awful in the fifth game, even though they did pull within 3-2. Upham hits sparked the Froggies into a taking a 6-2 lead. Lamborn and Upham pulverized the Loners' front row. Meanwhile, Faleao and Jacklin produced key hits that created a 14-6 lead for the Froggies. Lewis attempted to lead a comeback, but a bad Loner hit ended the match in a Froggie win.

Lehi Coach Jaime Ingersoll said, "After being down 0-2 in games tonight, our girls showed a lot of determination coming back. They stayed patient on offense in the third game. Makayla Lamborn had great kills down the middle to hurt Lone Peak severely."

This particular issue of Timp Sports Weekly will focus on two weeks' worth of sports action. We will take a look at how the Awesome American Fork Cavemen and Cavewomen won their league's pre-region meet that they hosted on Sept. 3. We will then look at recent volleyball matches that the Awesome Cavewomen, Lehi Pioneers (AKA the Froggies), the Ferocious Pleasant Grove Vikings, and the Westlake Thunder, AKA the Shockers, played. We will also look at the riveting -- correction, ribbiting Homecoming Game that the Lehi Froggies' football team played against Westlake. As they say in Lehi, let's leap into those stories.

Awesome Caveharriers Win Both Girls and Boys' Titles at Sept. 3 Pre-Region Meet

The Awesome American Fork Cavemen and -women's cross country teams won the boys' and girls' divisions of Region Four's pre-league meet held at American Fork Sept. 3.

American Fork dominated the top 10 spots in both races.

In the boys' race, Zach Jacklin took first, Kasey "Corporal" Clinger second, McKay Johns third, Jacob Chase fourth, and Nate "Dick" Tracy 10th.

Although Herriman Pretty Pony  Lucy Biles won the girls' race, all seven of the Awesome Cavewomen's varsity runners placed among the race's first 10 finishers. Cami Squire took second, Sammy Hollingsworth third, Katie Cornell fourth, Lexie Green sixth, Maddie Bench seventh, Sophie Baird eighth, and Nikki Smith 10th.

"My varsity girls ran much better today than they did at Highland two weeks ago," said american Fork head coach Bruno Hunziker. "Nobody as a team could beat them today. They ran like a pack of wolves chasing after Davis. This is a tough course, but because it is their home one, the girls wanted to do much better on it. This is where we're going to hold region in October.

"Cami Squires had a better day today than she did at Highland. She's only a sophomore. Her second-place finish today has made her our No. 1 runner again."

AKA the Froggies, the Lehi Pioneers had Sara Musselmann finish fifth in the girls' race. Among other Froggies to place in it, Katie Struthers took 21st, Emily Squires 34th, and Alexis Watson 42nd.

Lone Peak's Amanda Erickson finished ninth in the girls' race. Among the Lone Peak Knights, AKA Loners, who placed in it, Annie Southworth took 14th, Ellie "Mae" Bybee 16th, Amanda Neilson 19th, and Lightning Lauren took 22nd.

All of the Ferocious Pleasant Grove Lady Vikings placed among the girls' middle finishers. Among the Ferocious Vikings' five fastest runners in the girls' race, Haley Tanner took 35th, Faith Olson 45th, Kate Spackman 46th, Kendelle Tanner 48th, and Shelly Eubank 52nd.

Both Lehi and Lone Peak had representatives in among the top 10 finishers in the boys' race. Loner Jacob Warbner took sixth and Froggie Ryan Roff eighth.

Among the other Froggies to place in the boys' race, Sean Haggar took 12th, Tom Heaps 15th, Austin Hinckley 23rd, and Mike Hinckley 29th.

As for the Loners' four other fastest runners in the boys' race, Seth Frickleton took 20th, Adam Jensen 22nd, Jamison Wilkes 30th, and Josh Christensen 31st.

As for the Ferocious Vikings' five fastest varsity runners in the boys' race, Spencer Palmer took 19th, Tanner Nelson 33rd, Walter Price 51st, Lightnning Austin 53rd, and Nate Mellot 55th.


Rocky Mountain Tops Quiet Westlake Thunder in RMCC Tourney Sept. 6

AKA the Mountain Tops, the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies quieted the Westlake Thunder, AKA the Shockers, by scores of 25-20, 20-23 in a final pool match of the Rocky Mountain Championship Classic hosted by the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, Sept. 6

Paced by Alexis Patten's hitting, the Mountain Tops overwhelmed the Shockers 25-20 in the first game.

In the second game, Kelsey LaPray and Courtney Paulson guided the Shockers in taking tight control of the action early in the round. The Shockers built up an 18-11 lead. However, the Grizzlies refused to go into hibernation. Patten registered a series of kills that tipped the momentum to Rocky Mountain's favor. The Mountain Tops soon took a 23-22 lead. A Tiana Meyer kill tied the game at 23, but Patten's front-row aggressiveness became the deathof the Shockers. Patten registered two straight kills that give the Mountain Tops a 25-23 victory.

Last-Second Field Lifts Westlake Shockers to 17-14 Win Over Lehi Froggies in Sept. 12 Football Thriller

Within several minutes after a last-second field goal had lifted his Westlake Thunder, AKA the Shockers, to a 17-14 win on the home field of the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, Sept. 12, Westlake football coach Steve Clements told his players, "Show some class on Twitter tonight. Just Twitter, "#17-14, Westlake,' and write nothing more."

The close win over their arch rivals gave the Shockers much to roar about, especially in regards to the quality of their defensive performance in the Froggies' Homecoming game. The Shockers held the Froggies scoreless in the first two quarters. Clements said, "Our  defensive players won the game for us. They kept coming up with plays that stopped Lehi cold. Our offense did score points when they needed to. Still, the game's outcome was all based on our defense."

Lehi recovered the game's first kickoff at the Froggie 34-yard line. On the first play, Shocker defensive back B.T. "Bolts" King stopped running back Caden Colton at the line of scrimmage. Quarterback Cal Miles raced 16 yards to the 50-yard line. Soon, though, the Shockers stopped the Froggies at the Westlake 47-yard line.

Related to former Lone Peak Loner wrestling sensation Matt Ah "Choo" You, quarterback Shocker Chaz Ah You tried getting the Shocker going. Despite throwing long passes to teammates like Shamon Willis, Ah You couldn't get his Shockers inside the Froggie 10-yard zone during the first quarter. In the meantime, it ended with Shocker Bryce sacking Miles for a 10-yard loss.

The second quarter opened with Froggie Braden Colton catching an 18-yard pass from Miles in hope of renewing Lehi's momentum. On the next play, Miles threw an interception to Timmy Forsyth, who raced 70 yards for a touchdown canceled out by a Westlake penalty. It merely delayed the game's scoring. Forty-one seconds before halftime, Brennen Riley caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Ah You. Nate Devries kicked in an extra point.

The Shockers stretched their lead midway through the third period when Frosyth, a "distant cousin" of late Hollywood actor John Forsyth, caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Ah You. After Deveries kicked in another extra point, the Froggie defense didn't let the Shockers make any more points.

Braden Terrill's long catch of one pass moved the Froggies deep into Shocker territory in the late third quarter. Aided by a Westlake penalty, Miles scored a touchdown on a one-yard keeper play, and Jacob Kesler booted in an extra point.

The score stayed at 14-7 until 3:04 in the fourth quarter. Long carries by Caden Colton propelled the Froggies to the Shocker 1-yard line. Taking a handoff from Miles, running back Spencer "Blackie" Blackham scored a touchdown on a first-down play. A successful, Kesler extra-point kick tied the game at 14.

Ah You guided his Shockers clear to the Froggie 10-yard line. A grandson of former Payson Kitty football legend Chad Smith, Koy Roberts sacked Ah You for a 10-yard loss. With only four seconds now left on the clock, the Shockers gambled on a field goal try. Devries kicked a field goal to give Westlake the win.

"My kicker has never played football before. He's a soccer player," Clements said. "I'm extremely proud of him."

Davis Tarts Beat Awesome AF Cavespikers in 2-Game Match at Lehi Sept. 6

In a Bronze Division game of the Rocky Moumtain Championship Classic played at Lehi Sept. 6, the Davis Darts, AKA the Tarts, defeated the Awesome American Fork Cavewomen by scores of 25-20, 25-12.

The Tarts took an early 1-0 lead in the first game, but Kendra Enosa's hitting guided the Awesome Cavewomen to tie the game at three. Kate "Koko" Kokol put American Fork ahead 4-3, but the Tarts regained the momentum quickly. Abby Rocha and Mackenzie Coy put on strong, front-row performances that created a 12-4 lead for the Tarts.

The Awesome Cavewomen had trouble bouncing back until the Tarts had created an 21-12 lead. Tristien Tausinga. Kassidee Roberts, Jacey Vincent, and Kailey Buckner orchestrated a strong rally for American Fork. Spurred on by a Buckner kill, the Awesome Cavewomen battled back. After a Whitehead block had put American Fork within 24-20, Madelynn "The Sicilian Maiden" Corelli registered a kill to give Davis a 25-20 win.

Game 2 opened on a horrible note for American Fork. Coy's serving sent the Tarts flying out to a 6-0 lead. Buckner, Enosa, and Tausinga paced the Awesome Cavewomen within 8-5. That turned out to be  as close as American Fork could get to the Tarts. Devastating his by Abby Darling, Kenzie Nicol, and Jenn Sappenfield stopped the Awesome Cavewomen from making a strong comeback. Davis won Game 2 on a bad AF bump.

Weber Road Warriors Defeat Awesome Cavewomen in RMCC's Bronze Division's Consolation Semifinals

In the semifinals of the Rocky Mountain Chamionship Classic's Bronze Division's consolation semifinals, the Taylorsville Road Warriors defeated the Awesome American Fork Cavewomen by scores of 21-25, 25-21, 15-10.

In the first game, the Road Warriors and Awesome Cavewomen battled to ties of 2-2 and 4-4. Chris Doughty guided her Road Warriors out to a 7-4 lead. Spurred on by Lauren "Itchy" Ritchie's serving, the Awesome Cavewomen batttled back to take a 9-8 lead. Tausinga, Enosa, Kassidee Roberts, and Itchy Ritchie, American Fork soon owned a 20-14 lead. The Road Warrriors didn't let the Awesome Cavewomen coast away to victory. Doughty and Whitney "Tune" Weaver guided the Road Warriors back within 23-21. Tausinga registered a kill that prodded the Awesome Cavewomen to pull away to take a 25-21 win.

A Renea Davis kill sent the Road Warriors driving out to an early 5-1 lead. Buckner's hitting kept American Fork's morale up. The Awesome Cavewomen pulled back within 7-6. A missed American Fork serve prevented the Awesome Cavewomen from pulling out in front. Weber managed to build up a lead as wide as 21-13. A "distant cousin" of Hollywood actor Eric Roberts, Kassidee Roberts stirred up another rally for the Awesome Cavewomen. Kailey Buckner's hitting helped American Fork pull within 21-20 on a Tausinga ace. Doughty's tipping prevented American Fork from coming behind.
The Road Warriors' 25-21 win forced a third game.

It opened with Weber taking a 3-1 lead. The combined efforts of Roberts, Enosa, and Buckner enabled American Fork to charge back within 7-6. The Awesome Cavewomen soon tied the game at eight. Weber broke the 8-8 tie on a double block. Key Lindsey Edmunds hits gave Weber a 15-10 win.

Weber went on to lose to Taylorsville in the consolation title match. Northridge defeated the Davis Darts, AKA Tarts, for the Bronze Division title.

Lehi Froggies Corral Herriman Pretty Ponies in 3-Game Match Sept. 9

In a Region Four volleyball match at Lehi Sept. 9, the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, corralled the Herriman Mustangs, AKA the Pretty Ponies, in three games by scores of 25-17, 25-20, 25-9.

The first game saw the Pretty Ponies get on the scoreboard first. However, Mikayla Upham's impressive serving spurred the Froggies into taking a 4-2 lead. For much of the first game, the lead changed hands quicker than you could say Ali Lamb Chop. Pretty Ponies Sarah Duncan and Savannah "Smiles" Lewis severely tested Lehi's front row, keeping Froggies Faitoto'a Faleao, Rylin Roberts, and Amber Lamborn from becoming lax. Two Roberts kills moved Lehi ahead 10-8. Upham and Sydney White contributed some sets that Lehi turned into big hits. The Froggies led by as far as 24-15. A Roberts kill gave the Froggies a 25-17 win.

For the second game, the Froggies leaped out to a 5-1 lead. Lamborn and Kara Moore's hitting helped the Froggies to stay ahead throughout all of Game 2. Lewis and Duncan still guided the Pretty Ponies back within three points several times during the game. After Herriman had narrowed the lead 21-18, the Pretty Ponies hurt themselves with some missed serves. Finally, Faleao registered a kill to win the game for Lehi.

An Upham kill in Game 3 spurred Lehi into taking a 4-1 lead. However, the Pretty Ponies stampeded back to tie the game at five. Herriman missed a serve, which proved fatal to the Pretty Ponies. Kylie Jacklin's serving stirred up a long rally for Lehi, causing the Pretty Ponies to self-destruct. Hitting errors by Herriman enabled Lehi to secure a 20-9 lead. The Pretty Ponies didn't bother to rally back any more after that point.

Roberts led the Froggies with 15 kills and Lamborn contributed another 10. White had seven digs and Faleao three.

Ferocious PG Vikings Defeat Lehi in 3-Game Match Sept. 8

Having lost the title match in the recent Rocky Mountain Championship Classic's Gold Division to the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, the Ferocious Pleasant Grove Vikings took revenge Sept. 8 by rowing over to Lehi and drying up their arch rival in a three-game match by scores of 25-21, 25-20, 25-18.

The match opened with Ferocious Viking Alexis Sharp, a "distant cousin" of Vanity Fair character Becky Sharp, tipping the ball into a Lehi hole. Before long, the Ferocious Vikings commanded a 3-1 lead. Kills by Brooklyn Dahl and Emilee Anderson frustrated the Froggies. Still, Rylin Roberts, Faitoto'a Faleao, Amber Lamborn, and Ali "Baba" Greenwood battled back to take leads of 6-5, 10-8, and 12-10. Sara Hamson guided the Ferocious Vikings' front row in keeping Lehi from taking strong control of the momentum. Finally, Bailey Nixon, no relation to the late Richard "Tricky Dick" Nixon, registered a kill that broke a 19-19 tie. Nixon and Janiel Biggs produced hits that kept the Ferocious Vikings ahead for the rest of the game. Nat Sua-Filo registered a kill to give Pleasant Grove a 25-21 win.

The second game was also a seesaw battle. Jacklin, Roberts, Greenwood, Upham, and Faleao held their own against Hamson, a sister of BY Zoobie athlete Jenn Hamson. For a while, neither team could led by more than three points. Eventually, Nixon made two straight kills that gave Pleasant Grove a 25-20 win.

Although Game 3 opened with Lehi leaping out to an early 2-1 lead, Dahl and Hamson stirred up a rally that produced an 11-3 lead for Pleasant Grove. The Froggies didn't let the Ferocious Vikings cruise to an easy win. Moore and Roberts organized a rally that pushed the Froggies into tying the game at 15. A Dahl tip put Pleasant Grove back out in front. Nixon's hitting gave the Ferocious Vikings the momentum they needed for winning 25-18.

Pleasant Grove Coach Alyce Jones said, "We learned today that we gotta keep fighting. Bailey Nixon and Emilee Anderson came up with some big hits for us. Our serving was really good today. Nixon had nine kills and Dahl six."

The closing week of August 2014 went down as the first full week of the 2014-2015 school year. That week saw the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, open their home volleyball season with a three-game win over the Maple Mountain Golden Eagles, AKA the Golden Chirps. The week ended with the Froggies dropping an overtime football game to the Dixie Flyers, AKA the Flyboys, and American Fork winning both the varsity girls and boys' division of the 2014 AF Grass Relays. As Awesome American  Fork Caveman boys' cross country coach Timo Mostert would say, let's dash to those stories.

Lehi Froggies Cage Maple Mountain Golden Chirps in 3-Game Volleyball Match

The Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, opened their home season with a three-game win against the Maple Mountain Golden Eagles, AKA the Golden Chirps, in a non-league volleyball match played Aug. 28. Lehi leaped past the 4-A team by scores of 25-16, 25-7, 25-9.

For a little while in Game 1, the Golden Chirps looked as though they would drain Lehi in three games. The combined serving of Kimber "Hogan" Beyal, Sydney "Harry" Hendersen, and Kaysie "Sunshine" Harmer created a 6-3 lead for the Golden Chirps. Just as the Froggies appeared to be thoroughly roasted by Maple Mountain,  hot serving by Ali "Baba" Greenwood put new life into them. A "distant cousin" of Hollywood actress Emma Roberts, Rylin Roberts registered impressive spikes that enabled the Froggies to jump back into the game.

Roberts' teammates Taittoto'a Faleao and Kara "A. Lot" Moore contributed kills that earned Lehi an 8-7 lead. A bad Golden Chirp hit tied the game at eight. Amber Lambourn served up fight straight points to give the Froggies a 13-8 lead. Mikayla Upham hopped forward to register some hits that kept the Froggies' hold on the lead strong. Front-row performances from Kristen Allred and Sarag Mafi helped the Golden Chirps fly within 16-12. Greenwood stopped them cold, however.

Although Game 2 opened with a Julia "Child" Jensen block putting the Golden Chirps ahead 1-0, the Froggies became more quicker in springing ahead of Maple Mountain. As it became stuck in scoring, the Froggies ripped Maple Mountain's defense to shreds. Kills by Greenwood and Upham produced a 6-1 lead for Lehi. Before long, the Froggies had great cause to croak joyfully about a 13-2 lead created by them. Kills by Faleao and Sydney "Snow" White gave the Froggies the energy they needed for swimming away with a 25-7 lead.

In the third game, the Froggies let jayvee starter Faith "Buster" Crabb have a chance to prove herself on the front row. Crabb's efforts at the net snipped Maple Mountain's defense to pieces. Before long, the Froggies commanded a 9-1 lead. Maple Mountain couldn't recover from Crabb's efforts. Upham and Moore delivered punishing hits that ensured the Golden Chirps would be unable to regain the momentum. A Crabb kill scored the match point for the Froggies.

During non-league football action at Lehi Aug. 29, the Dixie Flyers, AKA the Flyboys, defeated the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, 49-48 in a double overtime thriller.

The game was one of the most riveting -- correction, ribbiting football contests played at Pioneer Stadium in recent years. The lead changed hands several times before its outcome was finally resolved in the second overtime.

Not to be confused with the Dixie University Partyin' Red Storm, the Flyers found a Lehi team more ready to play in the Aug. 29 game than during a non-league contest last September. During the Flyboys first drive of the game, the Froggies kept them from zooming beyond the 50-yard line. At the end of the Flyboys' march, their punter, McClane Keenan, lost hold of the ball, and the Froggies recovered it on the Flyboys' eight-yard line. Froggie tight end Cody Frampton really came alive through catching a touchdown pass during 9:40. Dallas Mosher kicked in an extra point.

Long carries by Ammon "Shep" Takau and Treton Miller spurred Dixie into the Froggie 10-yard zone.  Keenan scored a touchdown. He tried to scored an extra-point, but his PAT kick failed. 
During the next Lehi drive, quarterback Calvin Miles lost hold of the ball, but teammate Braden Goldfinch recovered the ball. The offensive fumble recovery gave Lehi fans a chance to see why Froggie running Caden Colton should deserve receiving fan mail from Division I coaches all over the country. Taking a handoff from Miles, Colton raced 60 yards for a touchdown. Mosher booted in an extra point.

The Flyboys didn't let the first quarter pass without scoring another touchdown. Quarterback Shep Takau fired a 41-yard pass to Miller for a touchdown. Keenan booted in an extra point to end the quarter with the Froggies leading by just 14-13.
Lehi lost its first lead early in the second quarter. The Flyboys marched clear to the Froggie 22-yard line, where Takau connected a go-ahead touchdown pass to Bret "Hairy" Barber. Keenan's successful extra-point kick improved the Flyboys' lead at 20-14.
The Dixie defense held Lehi scoreless in the second quarter. Lehi did stop one Flyboy drive at the Froggie 8-yard line, preventing Dixie from scoring another touchdown that period.
The Flyboys' 20-14 lead vanished late in the third period through Miles scoring a tying touchdown on a one-yard run. Though Mosher's extra-point kick tipped the Froggies ahead, Miller shocked them through scoring a touchdown on a 98-yard kickoff return. Keenan's third straight successful extra-point kick sent Dixie flying with a 27-21 lead into the final quarter.
With Carlton having a great night on the field, Dixie had much to worry about him, especially during the final quarter. Midway through it, for example, he raced 67 yards on one carry, and on the next play. he scored a tying touchdown. A Mosher extra-point kick put Lehi back out in front 28-27.

A long Takau carry put the ball on the Lehi 18-yard line, and Miller scored a touchdown to put Dixie ahead 33-28. Keenan then scored on a two-point conversion, improving the Flyboy lead at 35-28.
For a little while, Dixie looked as though it would zoom home with a win. However, Froggie Spencer Blackham scored a touchdown on a six-yard toss from Miles. Mosher booted in an extra-point to force the game into overtime.

In the first overtime, Calton scored a go-ahead touchdown during a 19-yard play, and Mosher kicked in an extra point. Takau guided the Flyboys clear to the Lehi 2-yard line, and he scored a touchdown on a keeper play. Keenan's successful extra-point kick forced the game into the second overtime.

It opened with Takau passing 25-yards to Jaden Harrison for a touchcown. Keenan scored another PAT. Lehi had Calton score a touchdown on a 13-yard carry. Lehi then gambled on a try for a two-point conversion. A Lehi receiver caught a pass inches outside the end zone, ending the game.

Awesome AF Caveharriers Win Both Varsity Girls and Boys' Titles in 18th Annual AF Grass Relays

The Awesome American Fork Cavewomen and Cavemen pulled off an awesome feat during 18th Annual American Fork Grass Relays held behind American Fork High Aug. 30. American Fork won both the varsity girls and boys' relays.

"This is the first time that our girls and boys' varsity teams have finished first in the 18 years that we've hosted these relays," American Fork Coach Bruno Hunziker. "Moreover, our girls set a new varsity relay record today. The old one was held by Bingham. Today's new record is 1:02:5. The old one was 1:02:31."

Whereas the Aug. 30 meet's junior varsity races followed a format in which the schools' racers competed strictly as individuals, the Grass Relays' varsity portion involved racers on five-member teams each taking a turn at carrying a baton twice around a mile-long course dotted in spots with bales of hay near the baseball field.

The members of the Awesome Cavewomen's varsity relay team included Sammy Hollingsworth, Maddie Bond, Katie Cornell, Lexi Green, and Sophie Baird. The Awesome Cavemen's varsity team include Zach Jacklin, McKay Johns, Jacob Chase, and Danny Bentley.

The Awesome Cavemen took a wide lead early in the varsity boys' relay, and none of the other teams could close in on them. The No. 5 runner on the American Fork boys' varsity team, McKay Johns said, "I didn't have anyone following closely behind me. I finished 69 seconds ahead of the first guy behind me. It had been pretty clear during the second handoff, we would win by a wide distance. This is a great way to begin the season."

The outcome of the varsity girls' race stayed murky all the way through the course of the hour that it lasted. For a while, the race went down as a contest between Jordan and American Fork. However, the Olympus Titans, AKA the Midgets, soon swiped the second-place spot from the Jordan Beetdiggers, AKA the Plowgirls. Olympus stayed closely behind American Fork for a little while. Uintah then squeezed the Midgets out of the second-place spot. Even the Mountain Crest Mustangs, AKA the Ponies, swiped the second-place spot in hopes of overtaking American Fork. The Awesome Cavewomen continued staying ahead, though.
"When Maddie brought us into first place, I extended a long enough distance to stay ahead of the other runners during my turn on the course," Baird said.
"When I got the baton, I stayed narrowly ahead of Jordan, Uintah, and Mountain Crest's runners," said Lexi Green, American Fork's No. 5 runner, who had crossed the finish line ahead of the race's other No. 5 runners.
While the Awesome Cavewomen had turned out to be the fastest varsity girls' relay team, none of them emerged the as the race's fastest baton carrier. The medal for that honor went to Bingham's Marlee Mitchell. Still the Awesome Cavewomen had two representatives among the race's 15 fastest racers. Hollingsworth got recognized for finishing seventh and Bench 12th.
AKA the Froggies, the Lehi Pioneers had a teammate among the race's top finishers: Sarah Muggleson, who finished 14th.
Four Awesome Cavemen represented American Fork in the varsity boys' top 15 fastest baton carriers. Jacklin took first, Clinger second, Johns third, and Chase eight.

Lone Peak's Adam Jensen took sixth among the varsity boys' relay race's 15 top baton carriers, earning his team a fourth-place finish in the race. The Froggies took third in the varsity boys' team rankings, thanks to Ryan Watson finishing 12th and Sean Hagger 15th in their race's top 15 finishers.

The Awesome Cavewomen posted winners in both the freshman-sophomore and junior-senior jayvee races. Cami Squires finished first and Katie Bradshaw second in the freshman-sophomore race. In the girls' jayvee junior-senior race, Nikki Smith took first and teammate Ann Gunther fifth.

Two of American Fork's arch rivals had runners among the top 10 finishers in each of those races. The Lone Peak Loners had Amanda Neilson take third and Alison Tennant seventh in the freshman-sophomore girls' race. Froggie Emily Stowers took fifth in it.

A "distant cousin" of late TV actor Andy Kauffman, Froggie Maddie Kauffman took second in the junior-senior jayvee girls' race. Lone Peak's Amanda Harvey took ninth in that same race.

"Cami Squires is our No. 1 runner, but she had a bad afternoon at the Highland Invitational up at Sugarhouse Park last week. She finished as our No. 6 girl. So we had her run in the freshman-sophomore race this morning," said Hunziker. "This year's girls team has the deepest amount of talent I've seen in years. Any seven of them could win spots on the varsity team on any given day."

The Awesome Cavemen didn't have anyone finish in the top 10 of the freshman-sophomore race. Froggie Collin Morrison won it while teammate Mike Hinckley took second in it. Westlake Shocker Lyle Johnston took eighth in that same race.

The Awesome Cavemen dominated the jayvee junior-senior boys' race. During it, Awesome Cavewomen Joe Simmons took firsth, Hagen Harmer second, Connor Hoopes fourth, Nate Tracy fifth, and Ashton Jensen ninth.

In that same race, Froggie Dylan Barker took third and Shocker Josh Call sixth.

Lehi Coach Jamie Alvisio said, "Our boys had won the recent Wasatch Invitational. Our third-place finish in the varsity boys' relay showed how well they could keep faring this season."

American Fork boys' coach Timo Mostert said, "We had a really great time through this past summer in getting ready for this season. Because the course here is their home one, our guys were the all more motivated to open their season with a win. Their first-place finish here if the fifth straight time that they've won the Grass Relays. We're going to have pre-region here next Wednesday. Four of the state's top five boys' teams are in our region. So the next meet promises to be a tough one for us."
