By Dean Von Memmott
Timp Sports Weekly Publisher

In a Timp Colt League thriller played at American Fork's Rotary Park May 14, the American Fork Pirates sank the American Fork Astros 10-6.

In the top of the first, Pirate pitcher B.G. Griffiths did not let a single Astro get on base. Meanwhile, Astro pitcher Grayson "Squirrel" Crawley didn't let the Pirates make any hits until the bottom of the fourth. Still, he gave up 10 walks during the course of the game. That was why the Pirates took a 5-0 lead in the first two innings.

In the bottom of the first, Pirates Jensen Whitaker and Jason Nelsen both came home on passed balls. The next inning, the Pirates picked up three runs on two walks and a steal.

During the top of the second, Astro Ethan Johnson rocketed a single into left, but he got injured during a fielder's choice play at second. He had to stay out for the rest of the game.

In the top of the third, a one-out single from Riley Phillips led to the Astros loading the bases. Carson "Nevada" Daniels smacked a two-run single that set off a six-run rally for the Pirates. During the rally, Brighton Gurney, a nephew of Awesome American Fork Caveman football legend Howie "Scooter Pie" Gurney, stole home. Crawley tripled in two runs, and he then stole home on two outs. After Dylan Beasley singled into left, teammate Bridger Brooksby struck out. Griffiths held the Astros scoreless for the rest of the game.

In the bottom of the fourth, Tanner Durfey doubled in Whitaker and Nelson to set off a four-run rally for the Pirates. That rally clutched the game for the Pirates.

In Timp Colt League action at American Fork's Rotary Park May 17, the Pleasant Grove Red Sox defeated the American Fork Dodgers 18-4.

One reason for Pleasant Grove's big was pitcher T.J. Winn, who had finished a recent season with the Ferocious Pleasant Grove Vikings. Winn's pitching proved to the key thing for the Red Sox holding the Dodgers scoreless until the bottom of the third.

In te top of the first, Winn hit a two-run in-the-park homer, and Korbin "Korby" Tanner singled in Weston Barnhardt to give Pleasant Grove a 3-0 lead.

It got threatened in the bottom of the first when a Ben Riggs single resulted in American Fork loading the bases on one out. Winn struck out Skyler Northcutt and Ethan Goodman to hold the Dodgers scoreless in the first.

In the top of the second, Logan Biec tripled in two runs and Winn hit a grand slam to ppower a 14-run rally for Pleasant Grove. Winn gave up a two-out single to Riggs in the bottom of the second, but again prevented the Dodgers from making any runs.

Taking over pitching duties in the top of the third, Robby Lewis held Pleasant Grove scoreless. American Fork loaded the bases on two outs in the bottom of the third, and an Ethan Nelson walk scored the first Dodger run. Winn struck Riggs to prevent an American Fork rally.

Pleasant Grove loaded the bases on fourth-inning singles from Winn and Austin Butler.  Barnhardt and Bice each singled in a run.

During the bottom of the fourth, a Jaxon  Draney single led American Fork to loading the bases on no outs. Draney and Lewis each came home on a passed ball while a Nelson walk and a Riggs single each brought in a run. Pleasant Grove shut American Fork down for the rest of the game.

Publisher's Message

For this week's issue, we look at the end of this year's varsity baseball season for the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, during their final home game against the Herrriman Mustangs, AKA the Pretty Ponies. The game proved to be quite riveting -- correction, ribbiting. Let's take a look at why that was so. We will also look at a Timp Colt League game played at American Fork's Rotary Park May 8, a Lehi-Lone Peak boys' soccer game, and an American Fork-Pleasant Grove baseball double. Let's got those stories.

Lehi Froggies Defeat Herriman Pretty Ponies 12-11 in Hop-From-Behind Rally May 5
By Dean Von Memmott
Timp Sports Weekly Publisher

AKA the Froggies, the Lehi Pioneers hopped from behind to win 12-11 over the Herriman Mustangs, AKA the Pretty Ponies, in a Region Four baseball finale played at Lehi May 5.

The Pretty Ponies led most of the game. Aided by doubles from Preacher Elderedge, T.J. Francis, and Colter Nordberg, the Pretty Ponies built up a 10-6 lead in the first 2 1/2 innings. Sparked by doubles from Blake Smith and Ryan Absher, the Froggies went on a five-run rally that enabled them to hop back within 10-8. Lehi trimmed the lead to 10-9 in the fourth inning. The Pretty Ponies picked up a run in the top of the fifth.

During the bottom of the fifth,  Colt Sampson doubled in Morgan Soper, a great-grandson of Johnny
Roberts, a one-time sportswriter for the old American Fork Citizen. Lehi loaded the bases on one out soon afterwards, but the Pretty Ponies zonked the Froggies with a double play.

In the top of the sixth, second baseman Soper grounded out Dayne Harwood, and pitcher Absher caused Jess Hathaway, a "distant cousin" of Beverley Hillbillies character Jane Hatthaway and Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway, to fly out. Cody Jarvis singled off Absher, but got stranded on base.

Absher did not let a single Pretty Pony get on base during the top of the seventh. An infield error in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Froggies to load the bases on one-out singles from Paxton Terry and Preston Higgins. Another great-grandson of the late Johnny Roberts, Koy Smith singled Sampson and Terry in for the winning runs.

Lehi Coach Jason Ingersoll said, "It was unfortunate that the past week was rough for us. It was really hard on the kids. Today, they battled really hard against Herriman, a real hard-hitting team. We had Grant Dixon pitch first, and then Ryan Absher took over at the mound in the fourth. He gave up only one run to Herriman. He pretty much kept them in check."

The Froggies were to have played three games against the Pretty Ponies this past week, but a Utah High School Activities Association board had found Lehi guilty of playing too many non-league game. So Lehi had to forfeit two of its scheduled games against Herriman. The assessment of the penalty came during the same period in which the Froggies got handed two double-digit losses by the Ferocious Pleasant Grove Vikings. So there was concern about how Lehi would perform in its final game against Herriman. However, Morgan Soper's cousin Koy had put that worry to rest with his game-winning two-run single.

Highland Mariners Sink AF White Sox 12-5 in Timp Colt League Play May 8

In Timp Colt League play at American Fork's Rotary Park May 8, the Highland Mariners defeated the American Fork White Sox 12-5.

Highland grabbed a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, and the Mariners then didn't let any White Sox get on base in the bottom of the inning.

In the top of the second, Highland's Nick Van Olphin hit a one-out single into left, and he soon stole home, touching off a five-run rally for the Mariners. Singling in the bottom of the second, Taylor Larsen stole home.

During the top of the third, Mariner Tyler Colfack singled into left, but he got pinched in a fielder's choice play at second. A son of former Awesome American Fork Caveman Travis "I'll Go Anywhere But BYU" Hansen, Tanner Hansen got snared in a squeeze play between second third, costing Highland a chance to pick up runs in the third.

In its lower half, American Fork loaded the bases on two outs, thanks to singles from Ethan Johnson and McKayMiller. a Caleb Clark walk scored a run.

Highland picked up its 10th run on a fourth-inning passed ball. American Fork answered back with a three-run rally that started with Riley Smith's one-run double.

In the fifth's Connor Hamm, a "distant cousin" of TV actor Jon Hamm, singled in two runs to touch off a three-run rally for Highland. The Mariners held American Fork scoreless in the bottom of the fifth to win the game.

Lehi Froggies Win Final Region 4 Boys' Soccer Game at Home Against Lone Peak Loners
By Dean Von Memmott
Timp Sports Weekly Publisher

In a Region Four boys' soccer finale at Lehi May 9, the Lehi Pioneers, AKA the Froggies, defeated the Lone Peak Loners 1-0.

The game was a defensive one that gave both of its goalies a fierce workout. Froggie goalie Tanner "Muncie" Munson had a particularly tough time against the Loners. A "distant cousin" of comic strip character Beetle Bailey, Braden Bailey guided the Loners in maintaining much stress on Muncie Munson. Bailey often stole the ball passed it to teammates Easton "Super Buttefly" Barfuss, Jaxon "Duke Action" Henley, and Jacob "Rattlesnake" Canfield for long shots that almost zipped past Munson. His quickness kept the Loners from scoring any goals during both halves, especially whenever Henley, a "distant cousin" former Eagles single Don Henley, would make indirect kicks for Lone Peak.

Munson received strong backup from Terry Bailey, a "distant cousin" of late singer Pearl Bailey. Terry denied Henley and Braden chances of scoring from inside the Froggie penalty box.

Loner goalie Kostner "Kevy" Olson proved to be very frustrating for the Froggies. That goalkeeper often stopped breakaway plays cold throughout the first half. With frustrated looks, Froggie fans watched Jake Clements, Chris Rodriguez, and Isaiah Altamirano make big drives into Loner territory, only to be stopped by Olson. Of course, Lehi also overshot the goal bar several times during the night. At 8:00, the Froggies' frustration finally ended when Kyle Curtis finally booted a shot past Olson. The game then returned to being a defensive battle that prevented any further scoring for the night.

Lehi Coach Jerry Preisendorf said, "This win secures our hold on second in region. We'll playing at home this Tuesday for the first round of the playoffs. Our performance today was not all that pretty, but we found a way to win. That's what is really important."

Awesome AF Cavemen Finish Jayvee Season with 1-0 Win Over Ferocious PG Vikings May 10
By Dean Von Memmott
Timp Sports Weekly Publisher

The Awesome American Fork Cavemen finished their junior varsity baseball season with a 1-0 win at home over the Ferocious Pleasant Grove Vikings.

The defensive efforts by both teams were so impressive that the game's outcome got decided early. I don't mean that sarcastically. Both squads played well on defense during all seven innings.

In the top of the first, pitcher Justin DeMarco, a grandnephew of my former schoolmate Ken DeMarco, did not let a single Ferocious Viking get on base.

In the bottom of the first, Pleasant Grove pitcher Corbin "Corby" Henry, a son of PG's head baseball coach Darin "That's Bush League" Henry, walked Hayden "Chief" Wood. A very close relative of UVU's head baseball coach, Mick Madsen doubled Wood in. Madsen got pinched while trying to steal third base a short time. The game turned into a defensive struggle after the first inning.

In the top of the second, for example, Henry singled off DeMarco, but got ensnared in a double play turned up by Madsen. Chantz Cook singled into left in hopes of getting his Ferocious Vikings to recover from the double play. They couldn't, however.

American Fork got a two-out single from Colby "Coba" Willis in the bottom of the second, but he got stuck on base.

Hitting a one-out single in the fourth's top half, Bryson Griffin attempted to steal home, but catcher Tyler "Guard Dog" Gardner tagged him at the plate.

In the fifth's top half, Tater Tot Briggs hit a one-out single into left, but he got snagged in another double play turned up by Madsen.

A "distant cousin" of Family Guy character Peter Griffin, Bryson Griffen clubbed a second straight single during two outs in the top of the sixth, but American Fork kept him and Hayden Veenker stuck on base.

On one out in the bottom of the sixth, Awesome Caveman Mason Warenski clubbed a one-out double, and he tried stealing third where the Ferocious Viking Tyler "Oh" Wells tagged him.

The seventh opened with Henry doubling into left, but he got picked off at second. DeMarco struck out Cook, and third baseman Willis grounded out Braden Livingston to end the season.

Awesome AF Cavebatters Defeat Ferocious Vikings in Sophomore Baseball Finale May 10
By Dean Von Memmott

The Awesome American Fork Cavemen completed their sophomore baseball season with a 5-4 win over the Ferocious Pleasant Grove Vikings at American Fork May 10.

American Fork did not let a single Ferocious Viking get on base during the top of the first. In the bottom of it, Buster "Bunny" Hardman, walked by pitcher Logan "Coolie" Hooley, scored the game's first run on a steal to home.

In the top of the second, Tyler "Oh" Wells doubled into right, he got stuck at third when teammate Brandon May got pinched in a fielder's choice play at second.

In the bottom of the second, Treil Morse singled into left, and he scored while Jace Ybarra got pinched in a fielder's choice play at second.

Cade Caldwell scored the first Ferocious Viking run a sacrifice groundout by Malik Overstreet, who had cost the Lehi Froggies a football game last September through catching a touchdown pass for Pleasant Grove.

With American Fork getting singles from Scotty Hughes and Tua Ward in the bottom of the third, a Mason Warenski sacrifice fly scored a run for the Awesome Cavemen.

They maintained their 3-1 lead until the top of the fifth when Derek Wall tripled in two runs and then scored a go-ahead run for the Ferocious Vikings on a Hooley sacrifice groundout.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hughes doubled into right, and Ward's left-field fly doubled him to force the game into extra innings. The game stayed deadlocked until the bottom of the ninth when Colt Sharer singled in Buster "Bunny" Hardman to win the game for American Fork.
